“bar meal only”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2012

I was quite shocked when I saw this place inside and do not think it has been updated since I stayed in the 70s. I cannot comment on the rooms and do not think it has the best view in Scotland either try the Rannoch moor hotel first where the food is excellent and so is the welcome.
I could not find any staff at first and had to hang about and then was dismayed by the menu which is very dull and dated and overpriced. The specials on the board were better priced but thought there might be some more innovative fish dishes but it was boring and the whole decor and ambience is quite frankly dull too. I also had to pay before I had eaten. The salad and fish pie were ok but rather a lot of potato and certaintly not as good as you can get today. Very glad that I did not decide to stay here - waste of money I think. I am better in a good b and b in INvnerness. Only good thing was the coffee a good lot and well priced! Staff when they appeared were fine but I have never been served a fruit juice in such a slapdash way. Personally I think the cafe on Eigg did better for value and interest!!

When I was there in the 70s it was very pretentious with a menu all in French and no breakfast earlier enough to catch a train (it was the British Transport hotel then) and I think it needs a hell of money spent on it or blown up! It is pretty ugly anyway!

We went to the Lochah Hotel for lunch on 11 June 2012. On being directed to a table adjacent to the bar, empty of customers and staff, with a fabulous view to the Isle of Skye, we waited and waited and waited (there were 4 other tables occupied). We received neither cutlery, nor menu nor were we asked if we would like a drink. A waitress served two other tables without acknowledging our presence. After 15 minutes we got up and left and the hotel receptionist said goodby as we departed.
The reputation Scotland has for hospitality has clearly not reached this location

There is nothing to recommend about the restaurant at Lochalsh Hotel. We had the worst meal of our 3 week trip to Scotland. The service was abysmal (not friendly; mix-up with the order),and the food was terrible and over-priced. I ordered the guinea fowl (looking forward to trying something different) - it was very dry and tough.

Fortunately we were'nt staying at the hotel, so unable to comment on the accommodation.

I live and belong locally and last week had my cousin and her husband visiting from Australia. They went, on their own, last Friday evening for dinner at the Lochalsh Hotel. They were extremely disappointed with the whole experience. The waitress who served them was possibly Polish or Lithuanian and they could not understand what she was saying. They ordered 2xRib-Eye Steaks and had to pay when they ordered!! Shortly afterwards the waitress appeared and was wandering about muttering something that they could not understand....it turned out that there was only 1xRib-Eye Steak left and she got quite angry with my cousin for not understanding what she had been saying!!My cousins husband Colin then said that he would order an alternative which incidentally was cheaper and he got no money back. The steak arrived and it was tough and Colin had to wait for his alternative course. This really makes me angry...what sort of welcome was that to the Highlands. Luckily on Saturday night the 4 of us went to the Plockton Hotel for dinner. We got a real Highland welcome and the food was beautiful. Needless to say when they come back next year they will not be eating in the Lochalsh Hotel

read reviews before booking so did not expect much but was nicely suprised. good sized rooms and bathroom except toilet awkward to use if you are of large build. price was good value and worth it just for the view when i woke up looking across the water to the isle of sky.the hotel is in a good location on the waters edge and just a 2 min walk from railway stn.

Room Tip: most rooms have a view across the water to the isle of sky so just check you have one of these rooms

In an age where even Highland Hotels are losing their charm chasing the supposed idyl of Travelodge efficiency it was refreshing to find one that hasn't. The Lochalsh is a big friendly welcoming relic of how it used to be. It probably needs a bit of cash and a bit of TLC but in this day and age I cannot begin to imagine where such a capital injection would come from. But the things that matter to me after a long day on the road should be duly noted. You are made to feel welcome. That they are pleased to see you and that you matter. Add this to good food and the best lochside setting in the highlands and you have that rarest of things. I will certainly be back.
