“Iconic picture spot”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2012

Fantastic castle with ample parking just off the main road. Good access and knowledable staff always ready to help with a bit of trivia. you can get some amazing pictures of the castle from the end of the car park. the cafe is worth a visit and you can sit on the mezzanine and look out over the water at the castle.

“Beautiful spot...don't miss the war poem engraving”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 30, 2012

Stunning, if familiar image....no matter how many times we travel up and down that road it still makes us turn our heads to check out.Once you're over that bridge it feels much more like 'far from the madding corwd'/Not a huge amount to see inside but worth just toddling around the exterior.
Don't miss the beautiful, deeply moving poem - or elegy - carved on the memorial to the young men who died in the War....Makes me cry even thinking about the words.
Despite the main road running close by, this is a wonderfully scenic spot and well deserves its accolades.

“Excellant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2012

Great Place to visit, the tour guide who we had to ourselves knew everything there was to know. The views from the castle are just amazing and inside was fantastic as well. You wouldn't be able to go around the castle if you had any mobility issues but i don't think you can help that one. Good value at £6.00 each.

“Cracking photo shoots”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 21, 2012

Everybody knows this castle one way or another - the history is quite fantastic - and the history of how it was restored - It is a small castle!! i LOVED the kitchen - you could just imagine it way back then!!! It is quite cold and you cant take photos inside...............!!!! ;-) Have a chat with the gateman - a Mr Macrae - of the Farquar Macrae clan!!! very interesting man!!! You can also have you photos taken with the piper before you make your way over!!! .............. and that can be interesting too ...... ;-) Also you can drive up the hill at the back - you can get seriously cracking photos here - just about 360 degrees!! beautiful!!!

“Dreich and disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2012

The castle is what it is - in the rain it looks a bit grey and unwelcoming, but its location is spectacular and the history is interesting enough.

This is one of the Highlands' iconic attractions, so it was really disappointing to see that it offers no catering at all from November to March. I hope the attractively redeveloped cafe and shop facilities were not recipients of public money. Perhaps not surprisingly, the pricey gift shop manages to remain open to meet your need for 'tat' but if you want a bowl of soup after visiting the castle, the management have decided not to bother.

Fortunately, you will find excellent food and a warm welcome elsewhere - although you may need to know where to look. You will find plenty of shortbread, whisky and the rest too - probably for a good bit less - so I would suggest taking the implied invitation not to linger!

Life carries on through the winter and more visitors should be encouraged to come. This place should be leading the way, but currently it is letting the area down.
