“clean but dated”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2013

Stayed here for a one night stopover on our way to Ullapool. Welcome at reception was luke warm to say the least with too many instructions said too quickly. We were in an annexe overlooking car park, room was clean, bathroom white suite with lovely soft towels. Room decor was bland, dated and uninspiring. My teenage son stayed in the single room next door and his furniture was worse - straight out of the seventies. We opted for a bar meal as didn't fancy the set menu. This was fine, my son loved his veggie lasagne, husband had macaroni cheese only they had run out of macaroni and used penned pasta instead - bland and dry. I choose the lasagne too but they only had one left so opted for goats cheese tartlets from starter menu and added sides of chips and salad. Was not offered any sauces so asked for tomato ketchup. This never arrived so had to ask at the bar a second time. Was finally delivered when chips were nearly all gone! Breakfast was quite good with nice selection - toast was thin processed sliced bread which let it down. Staff in restaurant were polite and efficient. Total cost of our stay was £161 for the two rooms which I felt was poor value compared to our £89 stay at the premier inn in Carlisle which was by far more comfortable and stylish. Swimming pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi was nice bonus. Don't think I would stay again, unless they invested some money to update the bedrooms and corridors.

"Modern, friendly, value for money", just some of the words that you would NOT use to describe this "hotel". Two stars would be about two too many for this establishment.

To start, the front of house staff (2 young ladies) were nothing if not rude, sullen and disinterested. Hadn't a clue about service or giving advice on local attractions etc. Don't even think about asking for water when the bar is closed as you have to pay £1.10 for a small bottle in the "leisure centre" (head down to tescos instead). Waiting staff walked around with sour faces, banging delph and cutlery at every opportunity; forgotten tea/coffee/toast orders appear to be their speciality. Lounge and bar areas are too small for the numbers of guests at this time of year (perhaps all year).

Room decor is severely dated, c.1970. The annex is like a rat's nest; I had to pass through 6 doors just to get to my room! Beds are uncomfortable, carpets are filthy and threadbare. Toilets have certainly seen better days, with mould finding a comfortable home in many corners of the room. Windows are rotten. Poor ventilation. Dreadful soundproofing between rooms. Tiny TV. No fridge. No hairdryer. Smell of must. Need I go on. Oh, one positive point... clean towels!

This is just one of those hotels that should either go quietly into the night or else charge people approriately for the crappy service that they provide. An utter waste of money. Very disappointed and annoyed.

We stayed for 2 nights, on arrival, when asked where our hotel was, they just pointed to the corridor. It then turned out we were up the stairs and there was no lift and we had 2 heavy bags and no porterage was offered. The bar atmosphere was stark. Very bright lights and basic. The dinner was awful and we actually walked out on the second night due to the food being inedible. Both mornings for breakfast they had to search for teacups and we were told that they didn't have enough cups for the number of guests. The staff culture seems to be poor from top to bottom and we felt that this was a transient hotel and not striving for repeat business.

We stayed overnight at this hotel as part of a coach tour to the Western Isles. Previous reviewers have commented on the shabby appearance of the hotel and in parts, yes that is certainly true. However, our room overlooking the hills behind the hotel, was quiet, very clean and spacious and we had no complaints.

We did not have the evening meal but the breakfast the following day was exceptionally good. It was buffet service and there were all the usual cold offerings: fresh fruit, yoghurt, meat, cheese, cereals, plus porridge and an extensive hot buffet using good quality ingredients, pork game sausages, bacon, haggis, hash browns and much more. The hotel must surely be a hit with climbers/walkers; a breakfast such as this fires you up for the day. Dining room staff were attentive and helpful too.

If we passed this way again, would we stay at this hotel? Yes, certainly.

Room Tip: Request in advance a quiet room for rooms at the back of the hotel, overlooking the hills.

The staff is very kind and the room that I booked were clean and ok for me and 2 parents. The bar and restaurant is amazing with a good sort of beers and food at good value. Wifi is free at entrance hall.

Very good value for dinner bed & breakfast, lots of menu options, especially at breakfast. At least four menu choices for each course at dinner. Staff very friendly and rooms clean. Overall great value for a few days away!
Really good convenient location with ample parking. Lots to see & do in the surrounding area!
