“Pray for good weather”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2013

Travelled in two sections. Crainlarig to Spean Bridge. This section in an ordinary train. Very busy book a seat or you will find other travellers use the seats for luggage and let the eldery and disabled stand. Great scenery but you need a good day to see it at its best. Fort William to Mallaigwas by the Jacobite Steam Railway. Again very busy and not to easy to get into the old carriages if you are less able. Scenery was great even in bad weather. If you leave the window ajar you get plenty of the smell of the steam engine (and smoke) when you go through tunnels. All adds to the overall atmosphere.

Beware when you get to Mallaig, could only find one public toilet - at the other end of the town/village and it was the only one identified on the map.

“Good but not great”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2013

There were four of us and we booked seats in advance so as to be sure of having a table - essential on such a long trip (the full one-way trip is almost 5 hours). Clean train with comfortable seating. Difficult to take photos out of the train windows and impossible to see much if it rains - as it usually does in this part of Scotland. The scenery is indeed wonderful and varied but it is hardly the most spectacular train journey in the world as some would have it. In places the scenery is often blocked by trees along the track. Not much to do in Mallaig unless you intend to stay in the area, but spend a couple of hours there and take the train back.
My tip would be to take the trip on a dry winter's day to fully appreciate the scenery.

“tourist trap!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2013

Don't take the train! Waisted money...
Go by car and see the Jacobite crossing the Glenfinnan Viaduct (what a wonderful picture!!!).
If you go by train, there is almost no possibility to have a good view or even to take a good picture. You only can get a glimps of de famous viaduct. The train stops at the Glenfinnan station - but - there is NO time to walk to the bridge or enough close to see it!!!
The trainride is only something for "trainlovers".....

Amazing journey on the steam train, a fantastic day out for anyone. Now also an extra special day out if you are a Harry Potter fan.

“Don't miss this!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2013

What a fantastic trip. The scenery is incredible and well worth the time. The young girl who sold us the train tickets at Fort Wlliam was extremely helpful and definitely deserves a mention. Nothing was too much trouble for her.
