“Nice family hotel”

Grand Hotel

Dec 8, 2007

I visited this hotel during my Scotland roundtrip by train (from Fort William an old steam train is running). The hotel is not too far from the railway and bus stations. You can walk the distance if you don't have too much luggage with you. During the night I experienced noise from visitors of the bar at the other end of the square (but I am a light sleeper). These were probably the smokers who are not allowed to smoke inside anymore.

“Maybe the name is wrong?”

Grand Hotel

The hotel is basically fine. With a few issues. My room was very small, with no desk space until I consigned the TV and lamp to the floor. Very clean though, well presented. Internet or wireless will probably reach here early next centuary.

What did bug me though....no smoking throughout the hotel (which was great) but the entire dining room staff gather out side the dining room at the rear on the fire escape, and smoke! All of which blows straight back through the dining room and the rest of the hotel.

This also really bugs me, because I wandered into the dining to book a table for the evening, even walking up to the smoking group, but I was ignored, even having made eye contact with staff! I eventually had to resort to ordering a bar meal. They ignored me!

The Grand Hotel must have been a beauty in its day - but has sadly faded into something bordering on a retirement home. To be fair, it is comfortable and roomy inside and it does look as though there have been some attempts to update the decor, but at the prices they are charging, I did expect something a little better. Everything is clean and there are not many alternatives in the centre of town, so I suppose there is no reason to complain, but... And that's how I would review this hotel, nice - but... The buffet breakfast was first class and this would have to be the highlight of the hotel. The location is set on the main street of Fort William (if there is another street, I didn't find it) and there are plenty of pubs and shops around. We visited during the last week of August and saw the local highschool pipe band busking in the centre square, which was a real treat.

“Okay, but should have stayed at a B&B”

I was on a driving tour of Scotland with my husband and he thought a night in a hotel would be a nice change from all the B&Bs we'd been staying at, so we stayed here. Overall the hotel was okay...the room was clean but everything seemed a bit old and worn. Breakfast was good the next morning and you can't beat the location, but you don't get that personal touch that you get from the B&Bs and it was about twice the cost of what we'd been paying per night.
