“Weekend with friends”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2014

February 2014 saw us return with friends to the Aite Cruinnichidh hostel in Glen Spean. We walked in wild weather during the days - and enjoyed self-catered candlelit dinner in the evenings. This hostel has everything that is essential in a base for the hills - and there are as many hills and glens as you could wish on the doorstep. Special mention of the owners Nicola and Gavin who have welcomed us warmly for more years than we all care to remember, making this one of my favourite places in the world.

Room Tip: We chose the en-suite room - loads of space, warm and comfortable.

My boyfriend and I were there in early august 2013. The owner was very nice and house is surrounded by great nature.
The walls in the house are paper thin and makes it easy to hear the people next door - earplogs is recommendable.
There isn´t any restaurant or shop near by, food most be brought from Roybridge or Fort William. The kitchen and dining area are large enough for large groups - but it wasn´t clean when we were there.
The shared bathrooms were cold as ice, unclean, one of the toilets didn´t work and there wasn´t hot water in the shower.

This bunkhouse is clean. Owners are friendly and helpful. We were a large group so we didn't have to share the rooms with other guests. Overall ambient was friendly and the kitchen and dining area are large enough. This isn't a hotel, so there is no restaurant, but we had dinner every night at Roybridge Hotel, not too far away (by car) and at a very reasonable price. Only hiccup: only for showers/toilets available, so you have to expect some delays at the rush hour.

4 of us stayed on a 4 person room which was warm, cosy and clean. No complaints whatsoever re this hostel. Ample hot showers and plenty toilets. Yes, it can be a bit noisy due to the building being mainly wood, including the stairs, however, it's an old converted barn so expect this. The kitchen has 2 stoves, microwave, loads of crockery and cutlery and plenty of hot water. Sheet sleeping bags are used with duvets. The eating area, which doubles as a common room is joined to the kitchen. Luckily, when we were there there was only one other group in, otherwise it may have been a bit crowded. Would definitely return as this hostel is excellent value and in a brilliant location for loads of hills.

Room Tip: 4 person bunk rooms cost the same as larger dorms so go for one

We stayed as a couple and hired out the family room which consisted of a double bed and bunk beds with separate toilet and shower facilities. We arrived late and were greeted by the friendly owner. We stayed two nights and used the place as a base from which to explore the surrounding area. The hostel itself seemed pretty basic but was clean and comfortable and fair value for money. Unfortunately there were some quite noisy people stomping around on the floor above us at night which made it difficult to sleep, but this was not the hostel's fault. Otherwise, a nice place to stay.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2011

It was a last minute trip to Scotland and we didn't book anything in advance, and didn't want to stay in the touristy Fort William. We tried getting the other hotels in the area but they were all full and Aite Cruinnichidh accepted our booking at 5pm. They did declare over the phone that their rooms were all bunk beds and that we might have had to share if others turned up. My partner went ahead to confirm it so that we wouldn't have to hunt any further (it is quite far out, drive slowly or you might miss the turn). The owner lives in the house next door and was very friendly, she showed us to our room and provided us fresh towels (extra 1 pound each). She told us where the toilet and showers were and the kitchen and told us that we could go buy our own food or eat at the nearby hotels. The building looks okay from the outside but inside it is probably at least 20 years old. The room had 2 double-decker bunk beds and we put on our own sheets, duvet cover and pillow cases. The room was a bit dusty some cobwebs and spiders by the window sill and the window shade was broken. The toilet was very basic and the shower had hot water but very little water pressure at 11pm. I didn't manage to shower, just wiped down and brushed my teeth. There is no internet and certainly no phone reception given its location. I was grateful we didn't have to share and we had a power plug to charge our phones. Well, I guess at 14 pounds per person, you can't complain much. Aite is an honest business, provides a roof over your head and a quiet sleep with fresh linen. By the way, don't eat at the hotel opposite (Glen Spean), the food is awful and not cheap!

Room Tip: Ask if you have to share, although after 5pm the chances are less likely

We've now stayed here twice and will definitely be back again. This is a lovely hostel in a beautiful area and is full of interesting, friendly people. It is always clean and even has a private sauna for the end of a hard day. Although it is designed to be basic, it also has a well stocked kitchen. The wooden structure means that noise can travel a little easily, but since it's generally full of active people with early starts that doesn't really seem to be a problem. Family and twin rooms are available.
