I have just returned from a 4 night stay at the Canalside Apartments.
We stayed in the top floor 2 bedroom penthouse apartment. The standard of the accommodation is 5 stars – very clean, modern with good quality furnishings and appliances throughout. It has absolutely everything you could want/need.
There are two double bedrooms, with very comfortable beds and plenty of storage, and one room has great views of the canal and Ben Nevis – what a wonderful sight to wake up to! A hairdryer is provided.
The bathroom has a bath with overhead rain shower which was very powerful with lots of hot water. Fluffy towels were provided, along with a few toiletry basics and toilet rolls.
The main living area is an open plan living/dining/kitchen. The kitchen has integrated appliances, including a full size fridge freezer, washing machine, tumble dryer, dishwasher, oven/grill/hob, and there is an iron, ironing board and vacuum cleaner. The kitchen utensils were very high quality and we made full use of the facilities. Small touches such as plenty of tea, coffee and even highland shortbread biscuits made the stay special. Our main priority was to go walking around the mountains, so being able to prepare a packed lunch was really useful, and something that you cannot do in a B&B or hotel.
The living area has a huge L shaped leather sofa with a TV, Sky box and video/DVD player. There is a table with 4 chairs, and also two stools at a breakfast bar at the kitchen.
The view from the penthouse is fantastic, overlooking Neptunes Staircase on the canal with Ben Nevis in the distance.
Frances, the owner, was very friendly and helpful. She spent a few minutes when we arrived showing us how the appliances worked and giving us a few tips for the local area. There is also a booklet of information about the area in the apartment. We booked direct on their website – Highland Holiday Apartments. The pictures on the website are very accurate.
The location of the apartments is fantastic – they are located just outside of Fort William in a small village/suburb called Banavie right next to the canal. A car is desirable but not essential as it is a 5 minute walk (at the most!) to the train station on the main road, which also has a regular bus service. There is a private car park, an area for bike storage and a private decked outdoor area with tables and chairs overlooking the canal. It is next to the Moorings Hotel which has a bar (serving bar meals) and restaurant, and there is a small tea room across the canal. There is a small Co-Op selling essentials about 2 minutes drive away and a large Morrisons in Fort William.
This was a fantastic place to stay and highly recommended.
