The Ice Factor is an indoor climbing centre in the old smelter in Kinlochleven, in the Lochaber area. It has climbing walls, bouldering walls and an ice climbing chamber. There is also an outdoor equipment shop, a large cafe, and a bar. There's plenty of parking space and there's a variety of accommodation in the area, ranging from campsites, bunkhouses/hostels, guest houses and hotels.
I received a 'Taste the Rock and Hit the Ice' experience as a Christmas gift. I was very impressed with the facility. The instructor, Guy, explained everything clearly and made sure we climbed safely at all times. I really loved both the rock and the ice climbing. The groups were small which definitely helped, and it's also possible to arrange private instruction. There's also open sessions for people with more experience. All equipment (rock shoes, climbing boots, crampons, helmets, ice axes etc) is supplied and we were taught roping and belaying techniques as well as the correct climbing techniques.
Glencoe and Lochaber are beautiful mountainous areas, so it's really good to have a facility where you can learn skills and techniques in safety. It's good for both adults and children.
I thoroughly enjoyed my experience and would highly recommend it. I will definitely go back.
