My husband and I "did" a tour through Scotland. We begun our trip in Edinburgh and went up via Inverness. We very much regret that we stopped at the Crown Court Hotel. It started promising: the hotel looks very nice, the interior is a nice combination of old and new style.
People really had done their best to make it look tasteful and welcoming. We arrived at about 7 pm. There was one lady taking care of everything. She showed us a very lovely room and we were happy that we could stop and have a rest, we had been driving all day. I longed for a nice, hot bath. When I entered the bathroom, I could smell the odour of old urine. That should have been the turning point, but everything looked shiny and clean, so... We unpacked and I took the shower to just shower the bathtob a bit (you know, one does, to get rid of dust or so...) and felt with my hand on the inside. I felt a greasy rim... all over. And when I looked I saw that it was a greyish rim all round the inside. I went down to ask for help. I was rather embarrassed. The lady in charge said she had no time to clean it, she was busy serving dinner. I asked her to give me some cloth and abraisive like Cif or so.
I was happy to do the cleaning myself, because then I would be sure it would be done right. While I was at it, I thought I'd do the toilet too. I will not give you the details, but it took me THREE towels to get it done. The things that came out of that loo! It was so dirty and had not been done for ages. Yellow, brown, yukkie stuff all over!!! So I cleaned the whole bathroom and thought: that should be it. NOT. In the meantime the lady in charge promised me a free bottle of wine with our dinner. Well well. Thank you! But later, after I had my bath and wanted to relax on the bed, before going to dinner, I found a spot on the duvet. It looked like something that came out of some one's nose, with a bit of blood and some little hairs. I did not believe my eyes! I kept calm, dressed and went down with my husband. I told the lady quietly what I found, asked her to do something about it. She asked me if I wanted to change rooms. But I said no, because I was afraid I had to clean an other bathroom again. We should have rushed out, but we were SO tired and we did not know where else to go. It was out of season and not many hotels were open. The lady came to our table and told us she had phoned the manager and the hotel offered us a free meal, wine and drinks and the room for half price. We were fine with that. We wanted to get over with it. We ordered a nice (not too expensive, just some thing we also would have taken had we had to pay for it) wine and liver for my husband and a steak for me. We did not dare to tell the lady in charge that the food was bad. Terribly bad.
Too greasy, too well done, tasteless, it all looked grey and old. The wine was terrific though! We had some bites, finished the water, saved some wine to take up and went to our room. Our bed was changed. We both had to go to the loo to get rid of the very, very bad dinner. I now understand why the toilet was so dirty in the first place.
For breakfast we hardly dared to take any thing at all. My husband took toast and marmelade, I took cooked eggs and some toast. The coffee was all right.
A very bad experience. Very sad. And pity. Because the hotel looks very nice. The rooms were very pretty. I think the manager has to have a good word with his staff.
