I used to frequent the Waterfront regularly to partake of the high quality local produce cooked and presented beautifully by the long serving husband and wife team. Since they departed I have purposely avoided eating here, as I didn’t want to be disappointed, until I could not get a table in Urquhart’s on a November Sunday evening. For those other regulars still to venture back since the change of management you have nothing to fear and for those yet to try the Waterfront get along there at the earliest opportunity for a real treat.
The starters were homemade and delicious then my wife had the roast beef with all the trimmings while I had salmon in a white wine and dill sauce with saffron rice. The beef was sliced thickly and was apparently melt-in-the-mouth tender while the salmon was simply stunning (what a joy to get fresh salmon that is not farmed and cooked to perfection). The medley of vegetables, including baby potatoes, parsnip, carrot and sugar snap peas, were served perfectly al dente in individual bowls. We enjoyed the food so much that we had to try a sweet and the sticky toffee pudding (it was like three desserts in one!) was the ideal ending to a really great meal with fantastic service throughout.
Considering it is a pub the quality of ingredients, menu range and high standard of cooking puts many restaurants in the area to shame and several ought to pay a visit to see how it should be done! The three course special for two, plus a drink each, came to under £30 which in anybody’s book is tremendous value for money for freshly prepared local produce. I just hope that they can maintain this very high standard and are not tempted to forego quality in pursuit of profit margin retention as some others have done. For a Sunday the place was busy and if there is any justice it will get even busier because the Waterfront, in my humble opinion, is a rising star on the Inverness food scene.
