“Like staying with your Maiden Aunt”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2012

The Pentland Hotel reminds me of a maiden aunt - slightly old fashioned, spotlessly cleaned and comfortable. I have now stayed here many time for work related events and the staff are always friendly, the rooms, whilst not the cutting edge in modernity have always been clean and comfortable.

The hotel is popular with tour groups so make sure you try and avoid peak time from beakfast and dinner, that said the hard working staff will endeavour to cater for you.

Room Tip: Ask for room at rear as you could be kept awake by traffic noise etc from street at front

Very uncomplicated booking via mail without deposit. The whole interior of the hotel is rather worn, but clean and functionable. The room itself was fair in size with a big bathroom (toilett, sink, tub with shower). Small Sat-TV, hairdryer and other usuall stuff was all there and working. The cabinets have seen better days but generally everything was working as it should.

The barfood was o.k., nothing fancy, just good solid food with reasonable prices.

Breakfast had all you need, quality and taste were o.k..

The Pentland Hotel is very clean, comfortable and does delicious meals. Prices are very reasonable.
From Thurso we went to Scrabster which is a fishing village and took the ferry over to Orkney which was larger than expected. The streets are very narrow but the views are lovely. The people are very friendly.
We travelled by train and that was a long journey. From Glasgow we had to take a train to Inverness then another train to Thurso.
All in all it was well worth the travelling time

Room Tip: The room we were given was lovely. We had a large double bed. There was also a sofa in our room wh...

Good hotel ideally located in the centre of Thurso.
The rooms are dated and in need of refurbishment but don't let that put you off.
The staff are very friendly, they smile and they're very helpful.
The rooms are comfortable and the food was very good.
Parking was on-street but I didn't have a problem finding a spot.
Good value for money.

Visited Thurso as a two-night base for escorted bus tour of northern Highlands and the Orkneys. Hotel staff were pleasant, breakfast and dinner service were superb, fish courses especially fantastic. My single room was on the small side and a bit dated, though the bathroom was nice and modern. Quality of food raised my review to very good. Based on room alone, it would have been lower.

My wife first stepped foot in this hotel for her 21st birthday celebration a good few years ago when she lived in Thurso. We made a return visit in June 2012 to see friends who still live in the town.
The hotel offers a good standard of accommodation, although anyone with mobility difficulties should be aware that there is no lift to the rooms. Free car parking is on-street, away from the front of the hotel, apart from unloading/loading at the ends of your stay.
Our room way very comfortable; double bed, settee, dressing area off the main room with plenty of storage space and a modern bathroom. The usual facilities of tea/coffee making, TV and DVD player (although, getting this combination to work between the two hand controls was a challenge that we didn't fully master).
The full Scottish breakfast set us up for the day. We didn't sample dinner during this stay although the menu looked enticing.
We observed staff assistance that must be second to none. An American couple with one young child needed assistance with bus and ferry timetables to get about to Castle of Mey and to Orkney. The waitress returned with copies of everything that they could have wished and was at pains to explain it all, giving tips on where to wait and how to flag down the buses.
A group of Glasgow policemen on a fishing trip filled the breakfast room one morning and clearly provided a challenge by descending en mass. The staff coped and our service was not really affected. Their noisy evening in the bar on the night before this observation was not heard in our room just one floor above.
A single failed light bulb was fixed during the routine room service schedule without needing to ask.
A double room with full breakfast is currently £75 per night.

Stopped here on my 1st night of a 4 day motorbike trip round Scotland.
Got a lovely room for a good price, had a nice meal in the restaurant and a good breakfast.
I forgot my phone charger in my room but a quick phone call and the very helpfull and friendly staff said they'd look for it then post it to my house. Can't ask for more than that. Will be staying there again.
