Stayed for one night en route to Orkney. On previous trips had always stayed overnight at the Portland Arms in Lybster, which used to be very good. But am glad that we've now discovered Forss House. One of the best rooms I've ever stayed in.
I endorse all the praise that has been included in previous reviews. This is quality, offered in a very relaxing, comfortable and unpretentious way. And that's what makes it different. Mrs Mackenzie is relaxed and knows her business. She and her staff don't need to display any artificial friendliness or professionalism. They've just naturally got it.
ps - The very healthy measures of Old Pulteney Liquer after dinner helped enormously.

Set in lovely gardens, with maybe the only trees on this very barren area near Thurso, this hotel offer a very comfortable stop over if you need access to the Orkney Ferry leaving from Scrabster. Large, well appointed rooms and friendly, if sometimes a bit quirky service. One problem that they need to fix, is the heavy doors leading into their kitchen from the dining room...they bang so hard that the whole hotel shakes, and that goes on while dinner is being served...not much fun for those trying to get an early night!

Stayed at this lovely hotel recently and really enjoyed it.

We stayed in one of the four rooms upstairs in the original house. very large, grand rooms newly decorated and upgraded, well worth the slightly higher price.

Very warm welcome, good bar area for pre-dinner drinks. Lovely intimate dining room serving fantastic food.

Nice walks in the garden with steps leading down to a waterfall and old mill to marvel at after dinner - It stays light very late up here!

Highly recommended.

My wife and I have stayed at Forss Country House Hotel twice a year for the past number of years. We live in Northern Ireland but have family in Caithness and use Forss House when visiting them. The base line was very good, as far back as the late 1990s. However, the hotel has, in recent years, enjoyed some well targeted investment - particularly in upgrading the accommodation. Staying at Forss House is simply not the usual hotel experience! Business means we are away from home too many nights a year in impersonal moediocre hotels. Arriving at Forss House is more like visiting well regarded friends - you actually look forward to it! The hotel is extremely well managed by Anne MacKenzie and her assistant Fiona MacKay. They are warm , friendly, courteous and above all welcoming. The meals are first class. Breakfast in the conservatory is memorable. Readers who are used to queueing up at a buffet for breakfast will delight in the local freshly cooked produce. Dinner is equally good with an emphasis on local produce - the chef certainly knows how to cook it! Some contributors have noted that the dinner menu is limited / does not change regularly. At Forss House, however, just let them know if you want something that's not on the menu and they will be delighted to cook it for you. Forss House is an exceptionally good, well managed hotel. I recommend it very highly.

The hotel is perfect for a relaxing escape. We received a very warm welcome and were well looked after by attentive staff throughout our stay.

The food was excellent - in particular an extremely good pigeon starter and very tender fillet from local beef.

The newly decorated bedrooms are spacious and comfortable. Unusually large bath which even a 6ft 4in man could relax in and nice Scottish toiletries.

Little touches like DVDs in the room and a selection of paperbacks and magazines help you to feel at home but it was the staff who made our stay really special.
