We stayed one night en route from the Orkneys and were expecting a 'standard' small hotel experience. Rob welcomed us with great friendliness and we were pleasantly surprised at the level of appointment at the hotel - our room was spacious and tastefully decorated and the hotel had some nice art and some small designer touches. In particular, the residents' lounge was very cosy and welcoming with free wifi and nice furniture; tip: take a leaf through the old visitor book on the table there with entries dating back to the 1930s.
The staff will serve drinks and coffee etc in this lounge. The restaurant area is furnished somewhat spartanly but service and food quality both exceeded our expectations - congratulations to Andrew and his team. Breakfast was equally pleasant although a bit of ambient music would have helped the atmosphere along a bit and avoided breakfast guests feeling they ought to be whispering to each other.
The gardens are laid out tastefully and accessibly, and there are walks and beaches in easy reach. This was really a very enjoyable stay and we would recommend it unreservedly.
