“amazing place, amazing location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2014

we visited Natural Retreats in Jan 2014. although website says that they take booking for at least 3 nights, when we walked in we were allowed to stay 1 night only. price very competitive £90 per room of such high standard, whereas the other hotel in village charged £80 for 2 stars only.

the room was very spacious, immaculate, smart, warm, bright and no-nonsense. amazing, very comfy bed, good 'in hotel' Wi-Fi. bathroom modern, clean, bright. view from the window to the harbour and towards the Orkneys. very quiet location. on site café available for hot breakfast.
hotel manager, Janette, very friendly and helpful. we got a hamper bag on arrival: loaf of bread, home made jam, butter, locally produced cakes and bottle of red wine (much appreciated as no shop nor pub was open in 7 miles radius)
hotel was open outside the season -not much accommodation available in winter in the area.

only 'cons' of the hotel are:
- walls are rather thin and we could hear the couple in the other room when they just spoke casually, and their tv.
-breakfast not included in room price
-for hot drinks -only coffee express provided, boiling water for tea was very time consuming

overall: I would be happy to come back anytime, definitely will check availability if in area.
the hotel has a luxurious feel and I do recommend it to everyone.

Stayed in a two-bedroom apartment with little windows looking onto the tiny harbour. Beautifully kitted out, with sleek, simple furnishings and a perfectly equipped kitchen. Lovely touch of a personal selection of books on the local area in each apartment, plus a couple of residents’ lounges with more of the same (families will appreciate the TVs and playstation if the weather is bad).
A five-minute stroll led to a shell beach... walking further along the coast towards the lighthouse we then came across a seal in the shallows with her white pup: magic.
Not a lot happening in John O Groats in mid-December, but the pub remains open (though very quiet) and nearby Thurso has a couple of restaurants, shops and a fishmonger in the town centre where you can pick up some local crab.
Go while the rates are so good, as imagine they will rise considerably in the summer.

Room Tip: Apartments are spacious, so you don’t need a lodge unless you’re a big group or want more privacy

During the week I held a training course in the new Natural Retreats facility at John O' Groats. First of all, the difference this whole complex has made to John O' Groats is unbelievable - they have transformed a shabby, run down, sorry looking hotel into a first class resort with excellent all round facilities. I was using Chalet 14 which has been designed as a training/conference venue. It was par excellent and I would have no hesitation in recommending it to any organisation who were planning a conference/seminar/training or planning meeting. Janette has the place running like clockwork and will give you all the information and assistance you need to make best and full use of the new complex - a tremendous facility for John O' Groats. I'll be using it again in the New Year.

Room Tip: Speak to Janette and tell her exactly what facilities you require

This was a break after 3 days in Skye. took a very scenic journey to get here ,so it was dark and difficult to find where to check in . As we arrived a young man appeared and sorted our key out and showed us to our room in the Old Inn. What a surprise, the room was modern, clean, warm and extremely well equipped.( could have done with some instructions for how to work the coffee machine!) There was a small welcome pack as we hadn't ordered the breakfast extras. I wish we had now but we were able to have a pleasant breakfast in the cafe on site. Fabulous views from our windows of the Orkneys, seals swimming in the harbour and watching the birds at sea was a delight. Duncansby Head is worth a visit and can be driven or walked to. Stunning. We ate at the Seaview Hotel on our first evening but stayed in and cooked on the 2nd after a visit to Tesco in Thurso. All in all this was a superb place to stay only spoilt by the noise from the upstairs room and the constant banging of the doors at 6 in the morning. Would certainly think about staying in one of the lodges next time which looked fabulous. A great concept and a lovely end to our holiday in the far North of Scotland.

Room Tip: I think we were in Port Winston in the Old inn. Try a lodge, might be quieter! However, view was fab...

Our family enjoyed a relaxing few days at the new Natural Retreats. Stunning accommodation with state of the art facilities. Really friendly staff with Janette the site manager most helpful.
The seaviews from the huge glass windows and decking are the highlight of the retreats. Although The flatscreen TV and PS3 were a big hit with the kids!

We had a minor fault with the heating and this was fixed within 10 mins of us calling. Superb customer service. We enjoyed the super comfy beds. The superb rain showers give the place a real 5 star look and feel and the welcome hamper with local produce and fab bread was a nice bonus. We enjoyed really great coastal walks nearby and would recommend natural retreats for a relaxing break

Having visited John O'Groats on a number of occasions in the pastwhen we thought it looked rather desolate we were rather surprised the change Natural Retreats has brought to the area. It is now very much alive with plenty to do in the area not least of which are the coastal walks.
We stayed in the Inn and were very pleased with the facilities in and views from our room. The welcome pack was excellent and sufficient to settle you in for the first night and more.
Although it closes at 5pm The Storehouse is a welcome addition with freshly cooked food albeit with a limited menu. There is a hotel nearby open for food both at lunchtime and evening and appears to have a very good reputation with locals although we did not visit it.
As one could expect with a completely new operation there can be odd issues but we found the staff receptive and responsive to our comments although the company has added many features which they have no doubt learnt from their other group properties.
We hope to return next year with both family and friends.

Room Tip: We had Highlander 2 which, although is at the back of the building has excellent views west taking i...

This was my second stay in the Inn and also in the same room, the1 Bed Luxury Studio Burghead. The accommodation is very well appointed with everything you need including loads of books to read and even a Monopoly set and pack of cards...!
The views to Stroma and Orkney beyond are wonderful especially if you get clear skies.
On arrival there's a fantastic welcome pack with bread and eggs so if you didn't manage to get any food on the way you will not go hungry.
If arriving late the arrangements to get keys is extremely simple and there is the hotel up the road which serves food, though I've not tried it yet.
My only complaint is that the Storehouse, boasting local produce, serves Starbucks coffee. I pay my taxes...I'll say no more...!
Would I go back. Yes.

Room Tip: They all have sea views but I do like Burghead.
