The Cairgorm has pride of place in the centre of Aviemore. However, one gets the feeling that the owners are somewhat resting on their laurels due to its location and consequent copious passing trade for the bar and restaurant. The hotel itself seems to be stuck in some Walter Scott inspired vision of the Highlands. Having said that, tartan wallpaper, tartan carpets and dead animal heads adorning every wall might be some people's idea of Highland chic. The rooms are fine. Reasonably clean with all the facilities you might require. Breakfast too was fine. Customer service, though, could do with a bit of a revamp. Smiles and a good moring cost nothing and add to the guest's overall experience. Speaking of which, we travelled with our small dog as the Hotel takes dogs at an extra charge. However, although the bar serves meals and is separate from the restaurant, dogs are not allowed anywhere other than the foyer. Bizarre. The owners are really missing a business opportunity here. However, if you are not going to allow dogs, then the least you could do is to make sure that your staff can advise where to go locally to dine where dogs are allowed. Unfortunately, this is not case as the staff we consulted were completely unaware of anywhere in the local area. Left to our own devices we found two place within a 10 minute walk who welcolmed dogs (and owners!) with open arms and a bowl of water and some dog treats, viz, Papa Rock and the Old Bridge Inn. Therefore, C minus Cairngorm - 'Could do Better'.
