“Family Orientated Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 6, 2008

My husband and I stayed for 1 night at Coylumbridge. We had a pleasant stay and couldn't really fault it. All the staff were friendly and efficient.

My only moan would be our room. It was described as a 'double deluxe'. Not sure what was deluxe about it! It was nicely decorated but very small with the bed taking up most of the room. I think there are 2 wings to the hotel and we got the older one! As we were only staying a night it wasn't a problem.

The hotel is definitely geared towards families with loads of activities on offer. The swimming pool is a good size but if you want a decent swim make sure you avoid children's playtime! Changing rooms were a bit grotty for my liking.

Breakfast was self service and ran efficiently.

Overall, a good place for a break. But if you're going to 'escape' from the children , maybe best to choose another hotel!

Over the last 14 or so years my family and I have stayed at this hotel or its lodges about 20 times. The vast majority of the stays have been excellent but there have been a couple of times when problems such as understaffing in the dining room has left a three hour wait for dinner or the sauna seating being so rotten it has litterally collapsed under people .As a rule the entertainment is very good as is their leisure facilities .The meals are normally of the highest standard though if you fancy something special off the menu it doesn't come cheap. The Woodshed bar is a nice quiet place to unwind and there is also the bar in the main hotel which usually has a happy two hours around 5-7 pm.The rooms are spacious and clean and quite often we get a family suite which has two bedrooms which is great for our two young boys to watch their programmes or play with their toys. The location is very good being a pleasant mile and a half walk from Aviemore and also being on the road to Loch Morlich/Cairngorm with its selection of water and winter sports. All in all a very good hotel and I have no doubt we will stay there again.

  • Liked — Nice rooms, good leisure facilities
  • Disliked — Can't take children over to Woodshed after 8pm even though it is usually deserted till 10pm

Myself and partner stayed here for an overnight in February 2008. The hotel is well situated in Aviemore and there was plenty of parking.

The room was modern, spacious and clean however there was a bit of a damp smell in the bathroom.

The facilities are brilliant. We particulary enjoyed the pool/sauna and the lounge area which had entertainment the night we were there.

We ate in the Grant restraunt. I thought the menu had a limited choice and the food was poor. My partner though enjoyed his steak which was a £7 supplement. Breakfast was great and we both enjoyed this.

Overall we had a brilliant time away and would book this hotel again.

  • Disliked — Food at dinner

We recently returned from a 3 night break in this hotel. The hotel has recently been refurbished and our original room (in the old building) looked good but had problems with the heating. Our new room (in the new block) was clean, spacious and warm.

Our booking was for 3 nights with dinner on night one. As in previous reviews breakfast is very good with a wide selection of hot and cold dishes but set menu provided at dinner has a poor selection with all the 'good' choices costing £5- £10 extra. My 'well done' steak was cremated for only an extra £5.95.

Otherwise the staff are very pleasant and helpful with the 'adults only' time available in the pool a definite must as the hotel is VERY popular with families with small children.

Try the Woodshed bar for a quiet drink.

Hotel is a great base for exploring the surrounding area as there is loads to do and see.

  • Liked — breakfast selection
  • Disliked — no lift and many rooms upstairs in both blocks

I have just returned from this hotel after spending the weekend there with my boyfriend. After reading some of the reviews on this website I was a bit apprehensive about the hotel. However, when we got there we were pleasantly surprised.

Check in was prompt and we even got upgraded, which was a nice touch. The staff were friendly and helpful. The dinner in the Restaurant was OK, but the breakfast was really great. The woodshed bar was really nice and cosy with a big log fire and did some nice snacks

The hotel is undergoing refurbishment at the moment so some parts of the hotel were a bit dated, however, it was very clean. The hotel is really popular with families, so there were lots of children running around, but it didnt bother us at all.

We were on a deal booked through the hilton website, 2 nights B&B with dinner on the first night - it was well worth it. We wouldnt hesitate to stay here again.

I stayed at this property for one night in September while on a tour of Scotland. In comparison with the other so-called 3 and 4 star hotels I was booked in, this hotel was a haven. The decor in the community areas had a decidedly lodge-like feel, while the guest rooms felt more modern. The outdoor areas were beautiful, and the landscaping was fantastic.

My room was quite small, and I was somewhat disappointed with the size and cleanliness of the bathroom. Otherwise, it was a typical Hilton, right down to the feather comforter.

My main issue was the absence of lifts. In a Hilton, even one in Europe, a lift should be available. I was traveling with some senior citizens, and they would have greatly benefitted from some assistance.

On the plus side, the staff was friendly and helpful, the food at dinner and breakfast were great, and the location was ideal.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2007

Stayed here for two nights in October with my wife and son. It was half term so the hotel was pretty full, mainly with families.

Rooms were average. Clean and fresh enough although we had to ask to be moved from an old smoking room to a non smoking room and, to be fair to the hotel, they accommodated us. Had a meal in the Bistro on the first night which was good. Ate in the Grant room the next night and it was pretty good too. Breakfast was excellent with a large variety. The hotel is in a great location just outside Aviemore and is a great base for all the activities in the surrounding areas.

On the negative side the pool was pretty small and closed to children both days between 5pm and 6.30pm. Now after a day's activity it would have been nice for the three of us to go for a swim but this closure made it impractical if we wanted to eat at a decent time. The games room didn't have a huge selection of games and a few of those that were there didn't work. The Funhouse also closed at 5pm which again wasn't much use. For a family hotel there was very little evening entertainment which I found very surprising.

The area itself was great. Fantastic scenery and loads for families to do from the Funicular railway, the Landmark woodland theme park, the Highland Wildlife centre to quad biking, canoeing and grass sledging.

I would undoubtedly return to the area but couldn't see me going back to this particular hotel.
