“COYLUMBRIDGE HOTEL”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2012

Cracking deal thru' Hotel Connexions. £40 D,B&B. per night. Stayed 3 nights. Staff were great. Service was excellent. Lovely groundfloor room. Mattress was sagging and needed replacing. Two double beds in the room. There's no lift and stairs are too much for me to manage. Entertainment on two of the three nights.
New style restaurant was nice, as was the food. Same menu for 3 nights.I've used the hotel for the last 40 years and probably preferred the original layout. might have chosen the wrong week,. Someone said that it was "toddlers" week. Most children were well behaved but every time in the restaurant there were "screamers" continually screaming and kicking the babies chairs. Surprised that dogs are now welcome. There might have been 6 or 7 large dogs there each night. One man had 3 Labrador size dogs with him.Majority of clients don't want dogs in the hotel rooms. And most people would object to a dog barking for 10mins. outside their room window. But I'll think carefully next time. Hopefully this doesn't spoil the Coylumbridge. Location was fine. It's central for most things. We'd a visit up the hill to use the Funicular Railway and a visit to Inverness on another day. Glenfiddich Distillery was visited on another day.

Room Tip: Request a groundfloor room. 2 years ago we'd a 2nd floor room and the fire alarm went off at 1am...

Thank you for your comments regarding your recent stay at Hilton Coylumbridge, I was sorry to read that you found your bed uncomfortable, the hotel has recently undergone a bed replacement programme so this I am surprised that you found the mattress to be sagging.

Hilton Coylumbridge has, for many years, welcomed pets to the hotel as it is the ideal location for walking. Pets are not allowed in any of our public areas and must not be left alone in rooms. A full pet pack is gievn to all of our guests who bring their pet with them. I am unable to ascertain which date you stayed with us but we do have a number of Toddler Breaks during the year. These breaks are tailored for our younger guests (5 years and under), with their parents/carers of course, and are very popular.

There is live entertainment within the hotel every evening except for Wednesday, and also in the Woodshed Bar which is located within the hotel grounds, Friday, Saturday and Wednesday evening with a Quiz Night on a Thursday evening.

The staff at the Coylumbridge were friendly & helpful. Breakfast was good, especially for a buffet - fresh & warm. Evening meals good too (although if we hadn't been dinner, bed & breakfast it would've been fairly pricey for what was on offer). Woodcroft Bar nice place to sit away from main hotel building.

However, there were some little things that, if improved, would've made our stay better:
- we paid extra for a deluxe room but not sure whether I'd class as deluxe - the door hit the bottom of the bed when opened.
- cleanliness could've been better. Every morning we had to search for clean plates & cutlery. When we asked for clean mugs one morning the waitress took back two mugs to replace them which were also dirty. Other small things - the shower curtain was dirty, bathroom floor was dusty, some mould around windows.
- some parts of the hotel are tired, especially decor in the hallways & stairwells. Surprised there was no lift.

Appreciate the hotel is aimed at & has great facilities for families, but some parents seemed to have interpreted this as kids could have free reign of the whole place - didn't matter where we went there were kids running around (some unsupervised). Acknowledge this isn't fault of the hotel & we don't mind kids being around, but if we were going away for a couples weekend we'd know not to choose this hotel again.

Stayed at the Hilton in Coylumbridge near Aviemore last week for two nights. Excellent and friendly staff on the front desk (think her name was Francesca?). Very friendly and even upgraded our room for us. Great views for the room window. Spacious and very clean room. Delicious breakfast from the restaurant. Only complaint was at breakfast, we asked for tea, this never came. I asked again, staff forgot and it took a third request for the tea to be brought to the table. This happened on both mornings. Overall, a nice hotel for a short break and would stay again and recommend to others.

Stayed for two nights and really had a good time, the refubished restaurant makes such a difference. We had dinner there on one night and the food was excellent as was the service. Usual buffet breakfast which has always been a favourite at the hilton. We managed to get a special deal a week or two before our trip so maybe wouldn't have as much praise if we had paid the overpriced standard rate. We go couple of times every year and manage to get a good deal ( not from Hilton themselves). We paid £58 for twin room b+b per night = £116 for the two nights from Hotels.com

Room Tip: It can be hit and miss here as not all rooms have been refurbed.

Disappointed describes the experience. Nothing is shocking but the high price sets an expectation of quality. The breakfast delivered on all counts but the evening meal was basic pub fare dressed up in a non varying menu. It had pretentions well above the catering expertise delivered.

I have been twice before and loved the previous visits. Now they have downgraded the restaurant to cafeteria decor and posh restaurant prices. On one day my £6 aubagine starter was 2 mouthfuls and gone. Not good chef.

To summarise, it now feels the hotel is managed by accountants maximising profit and not six missing the customer experience. And we all know where that leads.

We stayed in a suite for 4 nights. Suite was lovely albeit a little dark due to colour scheme. It has recently had a complete makeover with warm plum colours, dark wood furniture and velvet sofas. It was very cosy and kept clean would have been nice to have had a DVD player in suite. Bed was comfy. Paying much more for this room you would expect it to be relatively quiet but it wasn't really. We had very noisy people above us at night when trying to sleep we reported it but it carried on.

Breakfast - Not run very well. Waiting to be seated was a long time staff seemed to be wandering around not knowing what they were doing. Crockery was not very clean had to ask for it to be changed on 2 separate days. Breakfast station was good on first 2 days chef was cooking eggs, waffles and pancakes to order. The following 2 days were not so good a different chef was cooking. Food items were running low and the mushrooms were not replenished despite remnants being left in the bowl and upon asking I was told they had run out this was at 9.30am!

Evening meals - Only one restaurant was operational. The first night we arrived having driven 8hrs we weren't told that we had to book a table when we checked in so when we asked for a table at 7pm we were told 9.30pm was the only time available. The restaurant was empty. We spoke to the duty manager and she managed to get us in asap which we were grateful. Food here was actually very nice and cooked very well.

Bar Food and Drinks- Very nice we enjoyed our meals from here and is very cosy around the fire.

Woodshed Bar - Nice cosy atmosphere, food was average.

Bike hire - Great fun on the bikes, great bike runs around Loch Morlich!

Swimming Pool Area- In desperate need of a makeover. Changing rooms are a little dirty and shabby. Was told by a member of staff that work will start to change swimming area in next few weeks sounds like it will be very impressive.

Overall we enjoyed our stay but the hotel needs to make a few changes to be just that little bit better.

Thank you for your comments on your recent stay at Hilton Coylumbridge. I was sorry to read that your breakfast experience was not up to our usual high standards and I have passed your comments to both our Chef and Restaurant Manager. As mentioned our Leisure area is due to undergo a major refurbishment although a date has not yet been set. Once the final plans are in palce this will be placed on our web sites.

My wife and I stayed here between the 1st-4th March 2012, first off, on reading some of the negative reviews on here, I feel that those reviews were possibly written by aliens from another galaxy, I cannot understand any negativity at all. We stayed in room 134, it was spacious, had everything we needed in it and more, great views and scenery, and always warm and cozy. The food is second to none, as you will see from my pictures, all the staff are very observant and care only about the customers needs. It is great for families with children, plenty for them to do. The hotel grounds are fantastic to walk round, cracking little pub down to the left of the hotel exit, and it is only a 30 minute walk to Aviemore if you choose to walk it through the paths and pavements there, also, some great little walks directly across the road from the entrance to the hotel premises, get that good Scottish air in your lungs. In Aviemore itself you must try the Cairngorm Hotel and the Winking Owl pub for food and drinks, good night out in the Winking Owl. We will certainly be going back again, loved every minute of it, very relaxing, and fabulous massages according to my wife, a must do.

Room Tip: High floor for best views of the local scenery.
