“Good but a bit disappointing in some areas”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 3, 2011

Stayed in a family suite, had emailed in advance so got one on the first floor overlooking the back carpark. Room was a reasonable size, only one chair for relaxing in though. Was very hot in the room and had to leave windows open at all times, at least we were not over the kitchens. Plenty of room in second bedroom for a travel cot too. Bathroom fine, lots of hot water on demand. Cbeebies not working on TV, bit of an issue for a family with pre-schoolers!!

Grant Room restaurant for breakfast and dinner. Was very old-fashioned and the evening food was best suited for the plentiful Tartan McHaggis bus tours they have in! Kids buffet was good though, and restaurant opened at 6pm rather than advertised 6.30pm so was just about ok for the little kids. Breakfast was fine, lots of choice hot and cold and they would heat the milk if you asked.

We much preferred the bistro to eat in at night. However, this doesn't open until 5.30pm, not midday as the website states. Can easily manage 2 courses for your £15 allowance here and the food is much nicer. Kids limited to Planet Hilton menu though.

Lounge is lovely, menu and food looked good but we didn't eat here as not in the DBB allowance. Baby had his dinner here at 4.30pm though, free for under 10s. Wine is prices with City Centre bars though, cheapest was £4.70 for a 175 ml glass!

Pool was lovely and warm, Funhouse didn't rate that highly with my kids but we have several good softplays near where we live to compare it with. We kept our bikes in the bike shed under the Woodshed bar, is a good facility with access to Rothiemurchas right across the road. Good outdoor play area too.

We had a mixture of normal and sale prices so wasn't too bad value, but think we'll self-cater in future as you can pay to use their pool and you had to pay to get into the softplay anyway.

Room Tip: overlook back carpark if in family suite

Thank you for your comments on your recent stay at Hilton Coylumbridge. We fully acknowledge that our Grant Room Restaurant requires modernisation and it is hoped that this project will commence later this year. We do hope that you would make a return visit to us in the future.

Stayed two nights with dinner on the first night and breakfast included. Superb value for money as purchased earlier in the year when Hilton were having a sale. Room was a deluxe double. Spotlessly clean and well equiped. Bath was small and my 6ft 7" hubby struggled to enjoy a soak and decided the shower was the better option. Breakfasts were good but with a number of coach parties staying it did get hectic at times. Pool and sauna facilities were good. Recently opened gym area appeared well equipped but didn't get a chance to try them. Overall a very relaxing stay and will definately be going back.

The service was excellent and all of the staff were friendly and helpful. The room was showing some wear and tear, and the cleaners clearly didn't have great attention to detail, but all in all, it was fine.

The resteraunt was fantastic and the food delicious!

Room Tip: Book in advance!

Thank you for your comments regarding your recent stay at Hilton Coylumbridge. It was good to read that you enjoyed your stay with us. As you mention, we are a family orientated resort especially during the school holiday period but do also cater for groups and couples. We also have excellent conference facilitites and are popular for weddings.

Please accept our apologies regarding the non arrival of the parmesan but pleased that your waiter realised his error and apologised to your personally. We hope to be able to welcome you back to Hilton Coylumbridge in the future.

We pre-booked dinner, bed and breakfast here just for the last night of our recent holiday in the Highlands and Islands. This only cost £46 each. Considering that our other halts had been for "ordinary" bed and breakfast and cost up to £44.50, this seemed suspiciously good value.

With our four bags, we were surprised that there was no lift to our upstairs room, but we were immediately offered help at reception. After a bit of a trek, our room was quite large, comfortable and well-equipped. It looked out picturesquely onto a forest of fir trees - quite Christmassy for June!

We went back down to the bar. There were no staff behind it, but someone came quite quickly.

This is an unusually family-orientated hotel for a Hilton. The guests included groups of teenagers on outdoor pursuits courses, but they were well-behaved. There were also families with small children and babies who seemed rather fraught and over-tired. Some other older people might have felt this youthful preponderance detracted from the ambience of the Grant Room restaurant, but we didn't mind.

Our attractive rate included a good choice on each of three courses, and this was served efficiently and pleasantly. The only minor blemish was that when the waiter said he would get some Parmesan for my wife's pasta, he vanished. He did, however, come over and apologise later when he realised the omission.

The breakfast was magnificent in both hot and cold aspects. Although it was largely self-service, the supply was constantly replenished and not allowed to turn to cardboard or plastic as happens elsewhere. There was even a fresh omelette station, but having had sausages, bacon, black pudding, haggis, tomatoes, mushrooms, fried egg, potato scones, hash browns and eggy bread, plus fruit juice, croissants and unlimited coffee, we can give no evidence of the standard of omelette. Indeed I am quite relieved that my heart has survived for me to write this.

The hotel is well-placed between the bustle of Aviemore and the wilds of the Cairngorms, with lots to do within the hotel complex and nearby. It looked as if their bargain 5-day breaks would also be excellent value.

The minor drawbacks about lifts, kids and vanishing Parmesan are really nothing much. We got an extremely good deal and appreciated it.

We stayed at this hotel for one night and I was extremely thankful that I had only booked one night. The rooms were clean and a good size, the bathrooms were a bit small. I would not recommend this hotel for young adults, couples or business people as the hotel is full of families with babies and young children.

Thank you for your comment on your stay at Hilton Coylumbridge. Although I am unable to confirm, I think you may have stayed with us during the time that we had one of our very popular Toddler Breaks. We are a family resort and are very busy with families especially during the school holidays, outwith these times there are periods which are much quieter and would sincerely hope that this will not deter you from making a return visit.

We discovered the Hilton Coylumbridge a couple of years ago when we were touring the area from a B & B in Newtonmore.
We took our daughter to the Fun House and had a look at the facilities. Activity centre next door with dry slope skiing, skating ,quad-biking and wall climbing, skate park (open during May - October) and rink, while children of all ages can scale the portable climbing wall or enjoy the Super Jumper trampolines.
We had a look at the hotel with the swimming pool, and we thought it was the perfect place if we ever come back up this area.
We booked 4 days at the Hilton Hotel in Coylumbridge as it looked like it had great facilities; ie; spa, swimming pool & outdoor activity centre on site with plenty to do!
We arrived on the Sunday afternoon and didn’t do much due to the fact I was exhausted from finishing a 12 hour shift that morning.
The room we were given was on the 2nd floor, steep staircases & no lift.
The room we were in was very hot & we had the windows open all the time but couldn’t leave it open overnight as we were above the kitchen fans.
Next morning after breakfast we headed up to the Cairngorm Funicular Railway. Apparently you get the bus from right outside the front of the hotel, my wife told me. I said I was told it was outside the hotel complex on the main road, across the road.
So, as we waited on our service bus (buses only every hour), a bus came from the opposite direction and stopped outside the entrance road to the hotel. I found out this was the bus we were supposed to be waiting for.
We got a taxi back from Aviemore as the bus service stops around 5pm which price ranges anything from £4:50 to £6.
Tuesday after breakfast we decided to give the hotel pool a go. There are 2 pools; a leisure side with a slide and a deeper pool with a Jacuzzi on a corner. Most people were in the leisure side with the kids sliding down the slide it was quite busy. We went to the other pool which was mostly empty – we found out why – it was freezing!! It is the first time I’ve ever sat in a really cold Jacuzzi and got a cold bottom! When I asked the staff why the Jacuzzi was cold I was told because it was just the temperature of the whole pool. Needless to say, we didn’t stay there long.
We enquired about a massage & pamper session for my wife & daughter as it was the main reason we choose this hotel. The staff at the leisure pool sent us down to the Spa Lodge as it was the other side of the car park. We were a bit disappointed as it was in darkness & locked up – but there was a phone number we could phone to book a session.
We actually found out from the receptionist that the Spa was closed on Mondays & Tuesdays and it wouldn’t have mattered if we had phoned it! Nothing of this is mentioned in any literature to do with the hotel.
We had a walk over to the Fun House as our daughter (Who is 11) was desperate to go! Said on all the signs open from 10am till 6pm, only to find a sign on the door saying it was open from 12 to 6!
We headed into town after that as our morning activities were wasted!
We went to the train station to enquire about the Strathspey Steam Railway only to be told it it wasn’t on until tomorrow – we leave tomorrow!
After ambling around the shops in town for something to do we decided to get the bus back to the hotel. We waited from half past 2 till 20 past 3. Sure there was something wrong with the bus service we jumped in a taxi, the driver said there’s no service during the afternoon when the schools are on as all the buses are on school bus duty.
We got back to the hotel & headed to the Fun House in the hotel complex, only to find out our daughter – who was desperate to go was an inch too tall & didn’t get in after all!
Decided to go for a coffee in the dinner but had to ask the staff to turn the music down as it was blaring – not surprised the place was empty!
We concluded that our stay in Coylumbridge was nearly over and that it wasn’t a complete disaster.
The food was excellent & the service in the restaurant was very professional, but we could have been stuck in the hotel for a week with a couple of bored kids under 5 (which we saw in droves) after tea time in the foyer / bar area.
So much for the family hotel with loads to do – should say ; Closed Monday & Tuesday. (Especially when we have booked from Sunday to Wednesday)
We told all our family & friends we were going on a super pamper & spa session at the Hilton up in Aviemore. You should have heard when they said after hearing about our wee break.
Would I go back? No chance! We wouldn’t recommend it either!

Room Tip: Don't go near 273 - like a sauna.

Have used this Hotel a lot over the years and it is good IF you have small children! Had to agree with other reviews that it was very noisy with mostly under 5's running about. You can hardly hear yourself think in the dining room for "weans" crying and screaming!! However the rooms are good but the best ones are the family suites which have a separate bunk room that sleeps up to 2 children. The family rooms with 2 double beds are good value but are a bit cramped as they are really just the same size as a normal double room but have 2 double beds in them. Most of the staff were very helpful but few are Scottish. Breakfasts are buffet style and there is a very good selection of food , if you dont mind queueing with all the aforementioned "greetin weans". Dinner was a bit of a let down and yes the restaurant could do with a makeover as it is stuck in a 1980's timewarp and is very dingy. In the past the under 5's had their own High Tea room which personally I would bring back! Dont think I will be returning.

Room Tip: Family Suites are good if you get second floor.
