I love the Highlands, they are so powerfully beautiful and The Highland Club was the perfect setting. I appreciated the grounds and all they have to offer. Just a hop skip and a jump walk to Fort Augustus a sleepy one traffic light town home to the locks to transfer small cruise ships and sail boats down to the next body of water. Most things in town closed as early as 4pm and dine in restaurants by 5 or 6. Bars stay open but kitchen closes early. Back to the Club, I appreciated the one fob entry for amenities instead of key entry. And the staff did all they could to help us and always got back to us quickly or even came by the flat. We stayed in Abbey Church 12 a completely modern nicely decorated 1 bedroom flat on the 3RD (american) FLOOR no lifts. it made it rough to get our luggage up and down. We could have come around the front thru the abbey etc. and Made it a 2ND (american) FLOOR trip but it was too far away. At the time of booking they said the room has WIFI but did not, nor any phone at all. No cell service inside the abbey of course. Which made it difficult to plan out the next day. The only wifi was a terribly long way to the Lounge for free wifi and then back to your room or outside to make a call. It was very inconvienient unless you wanted to totally unplug technically. The washer/dryer was useless, it should really be only a washer, 2 1/2 hour wash cycle and dry all your clothes on the radiators, which we had plenty of, but that makes the flat extemely hot and uncomfortable. Thank goodness they had a manual for the oven or we would never have figured it out on our own. Not all the visitors will be from the UK and this is not taken into account at all. There was no dresser at all in any room to hold our clothes so we lived out of the suitcase, this is a self catering unit so you can stay awhile, if I wanted to live out of a suitcase I would have selected to stay on the move every couple of days which I did not want to do. So they really are green in Scotland and this entire Club tries to save on electricity by having the hallway and stairwell lights turn off by themselves and you switch a button on a wall to turn them on, well thank goodness I had a flashlight because it was pitch black in those areas and just finding the switch was crazy. I ran into another guest and he scared me coming out of the black hallway. The whole place reminded me of the movie The Shining, Dark, lonely, silent, secluded. We never used the pool or sauna but let me just say that they lock the doors at 7 or so and they have a log you "reserve" to sigh in for ONE hour of use and you can't come back for 24 hours to use it again. GIMME A BREAK! We wanted to play ping pong one night but all the paddles were badley damaged and the balls were smashed. We couldnt even go buy any. And one final note, we checked out early.
