I live close to Coia's and when I'm not working on a Sunday occasionally me and a few friends like to go out for lunch on Duke Street. I am a head waiter in one of Glasgow’s most famous and high class restaurants and it doesn’t usually bother me when I go to other restaurants and the service is not to the standard I am used to giving myself but today it did bother me because it was really quite awful. We have been to Coia’s a few times before and it has been perfectly fine, service pleasant and good food. So when four of my friends and I went for lunch today it went from ok to terrible. Everything started off ok as we arrived, we hadn’t reserved a table so we were ok with waiting if we had to but we didn’t and the gent sat us in one of the booths. We ordered and had our starters which were good, but that’s when I noticed that the staff could have done with a serious personality check. It’s really not hard to smile at your customers and I’m not just talking about one of them it was all of them. When our main courses started arriving, my friends who ordered a Panini and a baguette had there fillings mixed around the wrong way which is a simple mistake it happens. So we said to the waiter and he took them away and we weren’t bothered it really was not a problem for us, we are not fussy people, but it seemed like it was a terrible hassle for him with his obvious sighing. It didn’t take long before the food came back and everything was fine with our food although none of the staff would have known that because the grumps never asked how it was or if we were enjoying our food until we were finished and they were clearing the table. When we asked for the bill we asked if three of us could pay our part separately by card, which was like we had offended him and we received some more delightful huffing and puffing. As we looked over the bill I noticed that the side order of rocket and parmesan salad that I had ordered was priced at £7.95, not £4.25 which the other side salad was priced, which was more expensive than the main meal salads on the menu. I asked the waiter if that was the actual price of the side order or if there had been a mistake because it said special house salad on the bill. He said I’ll check that for you and so away he went and came back and told me it was without any interest why I was enquiring. As we were making our payments the waiter clearly made it obvious with his attitude that we had irritated him and making us feel rushed as we were working out what we each were to pay. To top it off as we were leaving we got no goodbye or thank you from any of the staff even after me saying thanks to one of them at the door. If that wasn’t rude enough, we over heard two of the staff talking about us as we passed behind them. It’s a shame that our afternoon in Coia’s turned out like that it really put my friends and I off of ever going back or recommending it to anyone.
