“Excellent in every respect!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2012

I recently attend a conference at the University and my stay in Glasgow was made all the more enjoyable by the hospitality received at the Alamo Guest House. A very quiet location with very comfortable rooms. The staff were most helpful and I will certainly be visiting again!!!

The Alamo Guest House is one of the better places we have stayed in the UK over the past 30 years. We stayed a total of 4 nights. Excellent view of Kelvingrove Park from the breakfast room.
Steve and Emma along with their staff are very welcoming. The comfortable rooms and ensuites are very clean as is the house generally. The buffet breakfast is a refreshing change from the standard Scottish or English breakfast. You get to choose what and how much you want. We will certainly want to stay at the Alamo when we make a return visit to Glasgow.

Room Tip: Both rooms we had were quiet and would recommend any of the rooms.

Our first visit to Glasgow was enhanced by the cheerful, helpful owner and staff at this very well located, comfortable guest house. Nice breakfasts, quiet rooms and very, very good showers. Lovely outside garden, calm old cat, and friendly guests.

Room Tip: A larger room will be more comfortable as one of the rooms is small.

I was in Glasgow this weekend for a conference and we booked in at the Alamo Guest House without really knowing what to expect. The Alamo is a beautiful building and the rooms, bathrooms and decor were all comfy, clean and tasteful. The manager was very friendly from the get-go and always eager to help or get us anything extra at breakfast time and offered us a range of other services we didnt have time to enjoy (400 films in his DVD library). The guest house is also situated in the west end of glasgow with the impressive Hunterian museum looming above at the top of the hill and is an easy walk from some of the best bars and restaurants glasgow has to offer. I would definitely recommend to stay here if you prefer charm and style and location over sterile hotel chains!

This was ok, but I wouldn't return. Our first impression was that the owner was rushed and a little annoyed that we'd arrived too early (10:30), with a long explanation about having to get the rooms cleaned after the last guests, after all! Okay, but emails had said any time after 10 a.m. was okay. We sat in the dining room and waited. There is no lounge, which I found very disappointing. The rooms (at least ours) were small so it would have been lovely to have a comfortable place to sit and chat with other guests. My bathroom was right in the middle of the main hallway with people coming and going as I made my way from it to my room. There were toys and a kid's bicycle in the small hallway/reception. Breakfast was the stated buffet, which was okay, though I think the best B&B "experience" gives you an ordered breakfast. They say there's a computer for guests' use but it was almost impossible to use because about 7 keys were missing.

I am very sorry that you feel that you would not be able to return to our guest house and there was not one redeeming quality or positive thing to say about us at all :o(

We do find that some guests do not read e-mails fully and on rare occasions there can be misunderstanding about getting into a room before 2pm.
The following, as part of the confirmation e-mail is sent to guests regarding check in times and was sent to you also. As well as being quoted on our website:

‘Earliest access to the Guest House to drop off bags is 10am. If we could kindly refer you to our frequently asked questions on our website concerning earlier than 10am arrivals (link quoted):
We guarantee that all rooms are ready by 2pm. We ask for all guests ETA, as we service rooms in order of guests arrival and often can have rooms ready for check in before noon, dependant on how many room changes on that day and the previous guests check out time.’

I cannot understand how this could have been explained any more clearly and why any guest would expect to be able to access a room at 10.30 am in the morning.
.
We do don’t remember and it is not in our nature, but can only imagine that my husband or I may have come across as annoyed, if you were aggressive or insistent on your room being ready for 10.30am. The only way in which to achieve this would have been to ask the previous guests to check out before 10am and we were lucky enough to have finished our clearing of breakfast and checkout duties, to access the said room by at least 10am! I am sure you can bring yourself to be just slightly understanding, as to why this is not an option, due to the customer service, comfort and welfare of our current guests.

We offer the option of early arrivals, as this is a nice thing to do, which many accommodation providers do not `. Without exception all our early arrivals are offered complimentary tea /coffee and biscuits in the dining room, so they can relax and familiarize themselves with the guest house and peruse our tourist information leaflets etc., whilst we prepare their room. Upon arrival, this option was given to you, which you took and it is unfortunate you were not kind enough to mention this in your review.

On our website we do not have pictures or state that there is a living room. That is why we offer guests the use of our very large dining room. A beautiful welcoming room that overlooks the park, wherein free tea and coffee is offered throughout the day, and guests are welcome to bring in food (plates , cutlery and glasses provided and cleared and use as a communal area for socializing.

I believe there was also another misunderstanding, that you were under the impression that you had booked an En suite room and not read the description on the website and on your booking confirmation. There are also pictures.

On our website we state that it is a buffet breakfast with a full description of what we offer, as well as many mentions of this on Trip Advisor, which obviously you use. We do not pretend to be something we are not.

With regard to the toys in the hallway and the small bike- Did they get in your way? I am very sorry if they did. They are placed neatly in a corner at the top right end of our large Victorian hallway (which is a ’T’ shape, being 11m by 4m at the top of the ‘T’ and 9m by 4m the length of the ‘T’, with 5m high ornate decorated corniced ceilings). To state that our hall way is small is flabbergasting- In our 7 years running the guesthouse, this is the first we have ever heard this. So I cannot imagine the toys and bike (unless they had been moved) were in the way. We are family run and are very family friendly, having toys for their use, as well as our own children.

Still on the subject of size, I suppose size is relative, but I have never considered Room 2 to be small either- but is a 5m by 3.95m with 5m high ceilings room small?

I am sorry you were not able to use the lap top , which we fully admit and mention to guests during check-in procedure that there are 3 keys missing (just counted and not 7!), due to recently our 2 year old finding a free moment to pick them off. Other guests understood this and were able to use the lap top. We have last week replaced it with our personal laptop whilst this one is getting fixed. It is free to use and fully appreciated by guests who don’t bring their own internet accessible devices. We also have free up to 62Mb/s infinity broadband Wi-Fi throughout the guesthouse. In the communal areas as well as rooms.

Again we are very sorry that you had such a negative experience with us.
The very positive review before yours says to quote :“This is a place where what you see on the website is what you get.”

This is a place where what you see on the website is what you get.Comfortable rooms, clean and well furnished. 1st Class location on a quiet side street opposite a leafy park but moments from bars restaurants and museums. What you you don't see on the website is the warm friendly welcome by staff and owner dedicated to good service where nothing seemed to be too much trouble. We only stayed for three nights but we will definitely come back when we next visit Glasgow.

Room Tip: All good but lower ground floor rooms may be quieter.
