In a word... Superb!

My girlfriend decided to surprise me by booking a night here at the Alamo guest house in the west end of Glasgow. I'm not really one for surprises but this is definately and exception. After work we checked in and were met at the door by the owner Stephen and his wife Emma who immediately made us feel welcome and encouraged us to have a look around and get our bearings. We were shown to our room downstairs which was decorated in warm, soft colours. The bathroom on the other hand was sharply finished with an incredibly roomy shower.(which i wanted to stay in for hours the next morning)

We were encouraged to use the dinning room at our disposal; so we grabbed a take away from a near by restaurant and enjoyed a pleasant meal at one of the tables. The room itself was charming, the bay windows have a beautiful view of the park, museum and university. Although the view was tremendous I could not help been drawn to the paintwork on the ceiling of the dining room which was the handywork of the owner himself. It's a must see.

Retiring to bed, my girlfriend and I made use of the huge selection of DVD's available to borrow and nestled in on our luxuriously quilted bed and soon fell into a deep sleep.

Upon waking in the morning, after the amazing shower, we headed to breakfast where all our nutritional needs were catered for. Scrambled eggs, croissants, toast, cereal, tea & coffee, yoghurt, juice, fruit salads, and more, the meal was perfectly balanced, and it was obvious that the owners took pride in serving only quality products - much appreciated.

I recommend anyone looking to stay in a friendly, welcoming and more than comfortable guesthouse within walking distance of most Glasgow attractions to give the Alamo serious consideration.

In a nutshell:
Incredible value for money,
Excellent rooms and ambiance,
Brilliant breakfast,
Wonderful hosts,
Positively Superb.

We spent two nights here. The guest house is clean and the owners have made great efforts to restore the place (the breakfast room is amazing!). We stayed in a downstairs room and, despite the fact that the owner says this is actually at street level, it still felt like a basement room, accessible via a narrow flight of stairs. Like a house, we heard the footsteps of the occupants staying in the room above us. The bathroom was small but modern. The bedroom was nice but there was no place to sit (except a small chair in a corner that looked too fragile to actually sit it). This guest house has no common sitting area (except the breakfast room) so the fact that we didn't have a sitting area in the bedroom was a bit of a problem for us. We liked the fact that breakfast was included in the price of the room but the hot portion was a disappointment, consisting only of scrambled eggs and toast. The location is within walking distance of the West End but we relied on short bus rides to take us into the central part of Glasgow. Overall, our experience was average compared to other guest houses we have stayed in in other parts of the world.

  • Liked — Cozy atmosphere and good location to the West End
  • Disliked — No sitting room, downstairs bedroom, unimpressive breakfast

I took my wife to Glasgow for her birthday and stayed at The Alamo Guest House for 2-nights. The house is situated in the West End of Glasgow overlooking a lovely park and about a 5 minute walk from the Kelvingrove Museum. The Transport Museum and University are also just a short distance away.

Whilst there are main roads nearby, the road the Guest house is in was very quiet, through the night. We were able to walk into the city centre, which was about a 20 minute walk, which we enjoyed albeit very cold, in fact the weather was awful, but we didn't expect anything less, in Glasgow in January.

The Guest house is run/owned by Steve and Emma, they have a little boy Leon and a big black cat. I understand they have had the house for two years and are busy transforming it and have long term plans for improving it further. We stayed in room 4 (downstairs) and found it to be very comfortable, warm and cosy at night. I'm 5ft 10 and my feet didn't stick out the bottom of the bed.

The room had dimmer switches as well as bedside lights, so there was adequate lighting and whilst the bathroom was shower only. it was very modern. We were aware of the breakfast selection before we booked, which was more than adequate for our needs.

All in all we thoroughly enjoyed our stay with Steve and Emma who couldn't be blamed for the weather, and I'm sure would do everything they could, to ensure, the guests stay enjoyable.

My boyfriend and I really enjoyed our stay at the Alamo Guest House. The guest house is conveniently located next to the Kelvingrove Art Museum and in-between downtown Glasgow and the West End (both were within walking distance of the inn). We originally booked a standard double room with shared bathrooms for 48 pounds a night. When we got there, the proprietors upgraded us to a triple en suite room for no cost. For three-star accomodations, our room surpassed expectations. It was nicely furnished, well lit, and the bedding was in very good shape. There was a plasma screen TV and a DVD player in the room and the inn had large collection of DVDs that guests could borrow. The breakfast was pretty good--eggs, cereal, yogurt, coffee, tea, toast, croissants--though nothing mind blowing. We'll be staying at the Alamo again the next time we're in Glasgow.

Adrian & Diane Hewetson Jan 2008.

Two nights spent at this excellent facility were truly memorable.
The close proximity to both airport and city centre as well as all road networks make this a great choice for any type of stay in Glasgow.

The building itself has been beautifuly restored by the Alamo's owner Steve and he and his staff are really helpful and freindly and went out of their way to make our stay with them very comfortable and enjoyable.

Our bedroom was very well appointed, warm and cosy and we slept very well.

The excellent breakfast is served in a most ornate dining room opposite a typical Edwardian park overlooked by the Victorian Gothic architecture of Glasgow University which is stunning.

We would happily recommend this guest house for it's excellent value, comfort, good food and great surroundings.

Give it a try.
