At £25 a night for a budget bedroom you can't complain too much but the room was distinctly in need of a little improvement - even reattaching the curtains and replacing the broken mirrors above the washbasin would help! The bed was comfortable although the walls were balsa wood-thin and you could hear every movement or word spoken in the next room.

Oh, and the hot water took about 3 minutes to arrive once you truned on the tap but at least it was piping hot when it did!

On the good side, the room was quiet even although it was facing Great Western Road which is rather busy and the breakfast was excellent and tasty so overall I reckon it was just about good value for the money.

  • Liked — The astonishingly cheap price and the breakfast
  • Disliked — A trifle shabby

I found this hotel good value for money. However, it did not meet the expectations raised when reading the glowing description of the Clifton in their brochure. The person in charge seemed a little diffident although the other staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast atrrangements came across as regimented. At the weekend breakfast is only served between 8.30 and 9.30. However, with the hotel fully booked and not enough tables, those who arrived in the dining room shortly after this time had to go and wait in the lounge for a table to be free. As seats became free, family groups of guests were split up between tables in order to accomodate them. I left feeling I should have hurried my meal in order to make room. Having booked a budget room I did not expect luxury, but I would have liked to be able to close the sash window without developing a hernia, and I found the swarm of flys in the bedroom a little alarming at first. Towel rails mysteriously fell off walls as doors were pulled closed and my companions bedroom window was held open with a block of wood. Despite numerous notices banning smoking, the bedrooms were all equipped with ash trays! If you are on a budget and want a convenient place to stay fine, but be aware that the claims in the brochure and website are somewhat exaggerated.

I have stayed at this hotel on and off for 3 months. They now do hot breakfasts. The problem is is that there is a big disparity in the rooms. Rooms 6, 8 and 11 (for example) are big and at the back of the hotel and so are quiet. The TV doesn't always work and the hot water can be dodgy but the rooms are clean and airy, the staff are friendy and it is a great price for being smack in the centre of town next to some really excellent restaurants. You can also haggle. If you don't like the room you are in - ask for another!

We were overbooked at our hotel so they set us up at the Clifton. We were very disappointed. Although we were to stay in the "honeymoon" suite, it definitely was not sweet.

Walking into the hallway the first thing we saw was a huge hole in the wall from the door knob. The hot water did not work so we could not shower, the room was very old and dusty. However, "quaint" or "antique" it may have seemed at first, that quickly faded. The room was cold due to only 1 small radiator. To top it off the unfriendly, unhelpful, and unsypathetic staff did not offer a hot breakfast like most other Scottish hotels - breakfast was a poor choice of cereal, toast and fruit. There weren't any fresh meats available.

I do NOT recommend this hotel at all.
