On first arriving the hotel is what you would expect of a hotel in a small town, we were only staying because we had a function to go to in Bothwell itself and we were only staying for one night (thankfully). The hotel itself could do with a major refurbishment, old carpets looking threadbare, dark wood fittings and all a bit dreary and old fashioned but not in an interesting way .... however it was a place to stay for the evening and the room itself was pleasant enough, clean, with an uninspiring view of the car park, food in the restaurant was good though.
The major problem is the staff, service is not part of their remit and i have rarely met staff who are so arrogant when ultimately they are working in a dreary backwater hotel, i wouldn't expect the attitude in a five star hotel never mind somewhere that would be lucky to scrape a three star. From the bar tender who decided that rather than serve patrons he would sit with his friends playing on the internet, to the old Italian waiter who whilst able to shout the results from the Man United game over the bar to his colleagues suddenly whilst serving in the restaurant couldn't speak English and whose rapport with customer extended to "Sit"
"Drink" and thumping the plates down on the table without a please or thankyou or to the kitchen staff who rather than walk the 6 feet to the kitchen to ask the chef for more eggs, bacon etc. decided to yell it at the top of their voice instead - very sophisticated.
In short i would say that this hotel has pretensions way above it's abilities and i would only stay here if you really, really have no other choice.

I will confess straight away that this hotel was a last-minute (i.e booked the day before) substitution , so I was already disappointed before arriving there.

First impression though was that this must be a really popular hotel - because the car park was full to bursting. We did finally manage to squeeze into a space at the side and parked. At second glance, the place looked like a small pretty sandstone building with several glass conservatories tagged on.

Inside, the reception desk looked like a 60's motel, although the reception staff were efficient and friendly and there was free internet access via a terminal on a low table in the reception area. We had to hike to our rooms through a large dimly-lit dining room (wedding room obviously as a couple were discussing their wedding arrangements as we trekked back and forth).

The room was uninspiring, overlooked a brick wall 3 feet away, and cold. The radiator was off in both rooms and the window was open in my colleague's room - given this was October and they were expecting us, this surprised me. I tried to warm up with a cup of tea, but filling the leaky kettle resulted in water flooding the bathroom floor! A swift call to reception brought a man to turn on the radiators in the corridor outside - allowing the hot water to reach the room radiators - and a new kettle.

Lager in the bar - a conservatory - was a pricey £3.60/pint, and with no mobile signal available indoors patrons (and smokers) frequently went outside into the adjacent car park, causing icy blasts to sweep through the bar. Even when the staff went glass-collecting they left the glass door open!

Having had enough of sitting in the cold and seeing that the restaurant looked decidedly understaffed, we went out exploring. Pubs nearby were awful, although we did find a friendly Chinese restaurant within walking distance.

The rooms were warm on our return and breakfast next morning - in another conservatory - was fine and the staff were friendly enough. Apologies in advance to the staff, but my overall impression is that of a shabby, chilly hotel that doesn't demonstrate the Best of Scotland, wastes energy unnecessarily and I probably won't be back.

We held our wedding reception at the Bothwell bridge in 2005 and the service we received was second to none. The staff at the hotel could not have done any more to ensure our happiness on the day. I can only thank the Bothwell Bridge for a great day!!

Stayed here for a wedding with my partner in June.
We arrived for the reception at 2pm, but was told the room would not be ready till 4pm, i had asked for an earlier check when i phoned and booked.
The room was supposed to have been a double room, but you couldnt move around both at the same time, i thought we had been given the broom closet. It was also in dire need of renovation. You can hear every movement from outside the room ie people walking past.
Staff didnt seem to care about complaints.
Good point was... a decent pint of lager.
