On first arriving the hotel is what you would expect of a hotel in a small town, we were only staying because we had a function to go to in Bothwell itself and we were only staying for one night (thankfully). The hotel itself could do with a major refurbishment, old carpets looking threadbare, dark wood fittings and all a bit dreary and old fashioned but not in an interesting way .... however it was a place to stay for the evening and the room itself was pleasant enough, clean, with an uninspiring view of the car park, food in the restaurant was good though.
The major problem is the staff, service is not part of their remit and i have rarely met staff who are so arrogant when ultimately they are working in a dreary backwater hotel, i wouldn't expect the attitude in a five star hotel never mind somewhere that would be lucky to scrape a three star. From the bar tender who decided that rather than serve patrons he would sit with his friends playing on the internet, to the old Italian waiter who whilst able to shout the results from the Man United game over the bar to his colleagues suddenly whilst serving in the restaurant couldn't speak English and whose rapport with customer extended to "Sit"
"Drink" and thumping the plates down on the table without a please or thankyou or to the kitchen staff who rather than walk the 6 feet to the kitchen to ask the chef for more eggs, bacon etc. decided to yell it at the top of their voice instead - very sophisticated.
In short i would say that this hotel has pretensions way above it's abilities and i would only stay here if you really, really have no other choice.
