Back from a one night stay at the Marks with husband and 9 yrs old son. I found the hotel excellently placed for all central Glasgow sights, bountiful shopping, restaurants and public transport. We had an executive room facing the street on the fifth floor. Expected and got some street noise but could have closed the second set of windows directly facing the street , which would have undoubtledly reduced the noise. Bed very comfortable, towels and bathrobes plush and fluffy, toiletry excellent but clearly not enough quantity wise ( a small bar of soap and a bottle of shampoo for three?! Didn't ask for more though - I am sure I would have received but I thought it is not something a guest should have to ask for specifically ). Great TV. Not much cupboard space (very little, actually) but we were there just for the night so it wasn't a bother. I loved the decor. Management and personnel were unfailingly nice and pleasant both before and during our stay; special mention to Thom for his patience and promptness. Our rate included continental breakfast at the hotel's restaurant, the One Ten, which is buffet based, fresh, tasty and varied. Coffe and tea excellent, service fast and efficient. Again, lovely decor. I felt the Marks is a business hotel which takes great pain to welcome all kind of guests, and with us it definitely succeeded. When in Glasgow again, will definitely stay at the Marks.

Stayed at the Marks in August of 2008 for 6 nights. Like other reviewers, I thought there were a number of good features of the property. The room I had was spacious (double and a single bed). The bathroom was clean (though I can see where shower curtains might get into trouble - they hang well into the bottom of the tub and might never dry properly). The staff were friendly and went out of their way to help - promptly calling for cabs, for example. A futher example of effort was shown when I discovered that their wireless (nice feature) does not allow for VPN connections (company computer). They set up a wired connection for my room for the duration of my stay that allowed me to work remotely. The location is wonderful - easy walking to most of the city's attractions.

So, what's not to like? The one issue I had (and a relatively large one) was that there was no air conditioning and the street is noisy. I found I had to keep the windows open to be comfortable. The problem is that Glasgow appears to be a party town (or at least the area where the hotel is) and my room faced the street, where there are clubs with live bands and rowdies that walk past and are quite noisy (bars close at 3, one night I was awoken to the last stragglers at 4 AM). The sound really echoes up the hard walls in the narrow street, so being on the 6th floor was no relief.

So, my advice is visit the hotel - there's a lot to like - but insist on a room that does not face the street.

  • Liked — spacious room, internet
  • Disliked — noise on the street at night

Good location. Easily walkable into the central attractions of Glasgow. Good deal. We had two nights booked for a party of three in a large room and two nights in a smaller room when the party slimmed down to 2 - the hotel simply kept us in the larger room for all 4 nights. I guess that may have suited them as well - but still an extra for us that was appreciated. Nice and quiet - which for a light sleeper in a city cente is a godsend.

Problems. Stocking of bathroom not done by cleaners and then not rectified when front desk were asked. But the main problem - cleanliness. Coffee rings from previous guests on tables still sticky on surfaces when we arrived (and when we left 4 nights later!). Shower room dirty in corners. Room was hoovered in only a cursory manner. Most gross of all - the remains of a takeaway meal, cigarette butts and a towel were outside our window when we arrived and left (we backed out on to a lovely view of an internal roof and the airconditioning system). Don't know what that was but it was pretty typical of the approach to cleanliness at this hotel as we experienced it.

Far from a disastrous stay - but I'd look for somewhere cleaner if in Glasgow again.

This is nearly a really good hotel.
If they had done the bathrooms in the refit and put in air con, it would be great.
Check in was polite and quick, but not charming.
Lobby and public areas very nicely done.
Room, 8th floor, big, very clean, nicely made up,stuffy.
Would not have been happy being on a low floor as the back of the hotel is above universal quite a popular loud bar. So go high!!
Wi Fi works, so thats great.
No minibar or comp water.
Only one small bottle of shower gel. No shampoo or body lotions.
Ironing board from Ikea.
So you get the picture, great rooms, but without the touches others provide.
Didn't use the bar or resturant. There are some really good places near by, but looked resonably priced.
This is a 3 star hotel with 4/5 star prices.
Nice but there are better.

  • Liked — Big clean rooms, great location.

We booked this hotel for a 3 night stay in Glasgow based mainly on the reviews we saw on Tripadvisor. I am not disappointed that we stayed at Marks Hotel but I am unconvinced that it merits quite as much praise as it receives.

First off, the location is terrific. Right in the middle of everything, just perfect, close to shops, restaurants, really easy to use as a base for exploring the city. (We were first time visitors to Glasgow.)

The included breakfast was terrific. A slight surcharge upgraded the "continental breakfast" to a cooked one (and still included all the continental breakfast items) but really you could get on very well without the upgrade. Loved the porridge included in the "continental" delivered fresh and piping hot from the kitchen upon request.. Very nice selection of fresh pastries and fresh fruits, with sliced cheese and meats and yogurt and cereal. Very nicely done breakfast - puts many other properties we've stayed in to shame in that department.

Front desk staff were personable and efficient and took care of any requests promptly.

The room was fine but I agree with previous reviewers that the windows do not open more than a couple of inches (courtesy of the window coverings, otherwise the window could have been fully opened).

Glasgow was quite warm during our visit and the room was a bit too warm and stuffy for comfortable sleeping at night. Added to that, we were on a low floor and on a couple of the nights there was still a lot of noise from the sidewalks (young people yelling, whistling, calling out to each other) well into the small hours of the morning. Air conditioning would have allowed us to close the window and better block the sound. As it was we couldn't open the window enough to get fresh cool air in the evening but it was enough to let a lot of street noise in. We didn't sleep particularly well for 2 of the 3 nights.

Marks Hotel is in an unbeatable location, the breakfast is great, and if not for the really warm weather during our stay would probably have impressed us more. I would definitely consider staying there again if I have occasion to return to Glasgow, but I would also take a look at other properties in making my decision.

  • Liked — exceptionally good location
  • Disliked — inability to open windows properly, no AC, street noise on low floors
