Having stayed at the Holiday Inn Express next door to this one, we decided to go one up and booked two nights in the Degar Suite (One of the penthouse suites) at the Holiday Inn theatreland.

There were two rooms - A sitting room / lounge with flat screen TV, nice big sofas and standalone lamps for softer light. There was a Playstation 2 with games, drinks cabinet with complementary brandy as advertised, the only gripe being that there was only a little in the bottle (See photos), when we booked the suite oposite for my mother in law the second night, we noticed her bottle was also almost empty - This only leads me to the conclusion that the bottles were deliberately kept at minimum to avoid the guzzlers!

The bedroom was clean and well presented, just like the website and brochures showed. The bed was REALLY comfortable, firm but bouncy if you fancy jumping on beds. The duvet was clean and new. There was a big TV with standalone surround sound speakers and nice standalone stereo unit for ambient sound or movie sound effects.

The bathroom was again very modern yet classic, with jacuzzi bath, separate shower nice mirror above the sink and bath robes on the back of the bathroom door. The robes were not at all soft, so should have been washed with fabric softener, the shower unit was too small so if you bent down to pick up something dropped it proved hard to reach it, possibly the units should be extended toward the WC to allow more space in the units. The bottom of the bath required regrouting and realligning between the tiles, these looked like they would fall off at any moment.

The food was great, really great compared to the holiday inn at Edinburgh zoo which was diabolical truly. The fresh orange was nice and cool, not watered down at all and had bits in it. The bacon was well cooked and there was plenty to go around. The hotel itself was nice and clean, the staff excellent.

On the second night, our baby boy had a problem and we had to call for an ambulance for him (He is recovering well now), the manager and staff were excellent, very understanding and helpful, i cannot praise them enough.

This hotel is well recommended, both for leisure, business and holidays.

  • Liked — Great staff, nice rooms, great central location.
  • Disliked — Penthouse suites were up extra set of stairs, and size of shower cubicle.
  • Tips/Secrets: — If you can afford it, go for a penthouse suite, personal service will be A1

I go to Glasgow most months as the shops and bars are second to none. Over the years, I've stayed in all of Glasgow's main hotels and this has to be my favourite. The first time I stayed in the normal room for £59, which was decorated nicely, although a little small. Since then I have always booked the Penthouse suite for anything between £120 and £160 per night, which I would definitely recommend. They are tastefully done and a lot more spacious, with a living room. Being 25, the playstation 2 went down well too. As with nearly all Glasgwegians I have met, the staff are fantastic and ridiculously friendly. I particularly enjoyed the breakfast, the sausages were just what I needed after a night on the drink. Going again for 3 nights this Friday. Can hardly wait

  • Liked — The Penthouse
  • Disliked — No Pool
  • Tips/Secrets: — Don't be tempted to stay at teh HolidayInn Express next door. It's rank.

I booked online to stay at this hotel as a Suprise for my wife, I got a really good rate, which I had to prepay at the time of booking. After reading the reviews I was really concerned as this was to be a special weekend & as my reservation was an advance purchase I was unable to cancel & rebook elswhere - Im really glad that we were unable to do so, we had a fantastic weekend. The nice receptionist with the long hair got chatting to us on check in & when we told her that is was a special weeekend (we do not get chance to get away so much as we have 2 young children under 5) we were upgraded us to one of the Executive rooms. The room was really nice (& looked to be freshly decorated) & immaculately clean. All the hotel staff where really nice & friendly (Especially the housekeeper on the 3rd floor)
We had our dinner in the hotel restaurant on the 2nd night of our stay - the service was excellent & the food was fantastic !! (I had the Sea Bass & my wife had the Beef)
We are hoping to to go back to Glasgow again, nearer Christmas time & we will definately be returning to the Holiday Inn - my wife was also really impressed at how close it was to all the shops.

Very poor hotel, normally I stay in the Marriot which I get for the same rate. This hotel was terrible in comparison. The shower was really stiff and almost impossible to turn off, the volume on the TV increased by itself, the bathroom was too small, the bed was uncomfortable, the staff weren't there when I needed to check in...... I wouldn't bother with this one.

Hopefully this reads fairly, from a very disappointed guest. I will be writing to HI and I'll post any response, to provide a balanced view.

My wife and I stayed here for Friday and Saturday just gone (room 104 - Executive Room), and I will not be staying here again.

THE BAD POINTS
First complaint is noise. I can accept external noise (abit of 'bottle-bin' emptying in the morning), but when the noise is constant door banging from inside the hotel and downstairs, during the day at night it's gets infuriating.

Second is the noise and lack of reasonable functionality from the air conditioning. A constant whistling noise is enough to drive a man insane.

Third, Mini-bar key. Where and how to get access?? Say no more, others have covered this.

Fourth, Breakfast - not the usual quality I'd expect from a Holiday Inn.

Fifth, No room service during the night (noted - it was 12:00am, but this is a holiday Inn) and not even a sandwich.

Sixth is on leaving and raising noise issues, got a "we'll look into it". If they offered an apology or some reason for the noise, always helps restore some faith

THE GOOD POINTS
First, Receptionist (on Friday) went out of her way to find and book a Teppenyaki Resturant for me and party of 7. Great service and thanks!

Second, the Exec. room although small, was clean tidy and reasonably furnished. Let down over noise issues.

Although a priority club member, didn't seen to make too much difference. Travelling globally, and be an 'expereinced hotel lodger', from now on I'll be sticking with the Hilton or Sheraton (with only one exception - Holiday Inn, Edinburgh (Zoo)) which is a great position and meets the standard I expect from A Holiday Inn).
