Booked this property after reading mixed reviews here and some very good reviews at other websites. Booked a studio for a week-long stay during a meeting at the SECC.
Compared with the prices for conference hotels near the SECC, this place was a bargain, especially given that it came equipped with a kitchen. It was well located in the Merchant City area of Glasgow, within walking distance of trains, buses, good restaurants, and plentiful shopping.
When I first saw my room, I had a "wow" reaction. It was beautifully decorated in a modern but warm design. It was unbelievably spacious for a single person, and the wardrobe and dressers were well designed for a longer stay. There was a working desk, a comfortable couch, and a kitchen with burners, microwave/oven, and a reasonable selection of pots and pans.
More pluses: thick towels, draped over a heated towel bar in the bathroom. Plush bathrobes to wear during your stay. Free self-service laundry in the basement. Courteous staff at the front desk, who promptly located a power adapter for me when I realized that I brought the wrong kind from the states.
So, sounds like a 5-star review so far? Well, almost, but...
-- Without a/c, I found it was necessary to open the windows at night during August. This would have been okay, except that the location is rather close to bars, restaurants, and other night life. Even worse, it sounded like a herd of elephants was occupying the room directly above mine...and they were elephants who liked to go to sleep late and wake up early.
--Although the property advertises as having a fitness room, the facility was extremely limited. The one treadmill was broken, and someone else exercising in the small room told me that he asked and was told that it wouldn't be fixed for another month. There was one elliptical trainer, one rower, and one bicycle. This is simply not enough for a property of this size, especially when equipment breaks down.
--The mattress was extremely lumpy. I usually have more comfortable mattresses in much cheaper hotels.
--High charges for wireless internet in the room.
Bottom line: I ultimately found my room extremely comfortable when awake, but the quality of my sleep (noise, lumpy mattress) left much to be desired. If you are a heavy sleeper who doesn't care to exercise, and who wants a spacious room in a good area of the city, Fraser Suites is definitely worth considering.
