Took my Son through to Glasgow for a week (20th Aug-25th Aug) and stayed at the Devoncove hotel on Sauchiehall street. It is situated at the far end from the city centre, which is still only a 20 minute walk away, thus is surrounded by restaraunts (Indian, Korean and Greek) within a stones throw of the hotel.
Further on, in the surrounding area, there are a number of other eateries within a reasonable walk. Also the nightlife increases dramatically within a 5 minute walk, yet the hotel itself is in a quiet enough corner for families to enjoy without fear of running into drunken louts.
For the drinkers, there are a number of pubs near by (which also supply meals) though Glasgow in general wont accept children in licensed premises after 8 pm. This proved to be a problem on Wednesday night as we searched for somewhere to eat and watch the Scotland match on sky tv. Eventually we had to grab a take away and return to our room and make do with watching england get beat on terrestrial tv.
The hotel offers B&B facilities, though they plan to expand later this year and improve the dining facilities to offer evening meals also. The choice on offer was just right, cooked breakfast in buffet style for the hungrier traveller, and continental for the less fullsome figured. Suffice to say I plumped for the cooked breakfast on the first 2 days but couldnt keep it going and settled for the lighter continental style later in the week.
The staff are kept well busy by the demands of guests who appear to think that a 3*** hotel should be able to provide 5***** service. They were never less than pleasant throughout our stay and indeed were most helpfull when we required some local information on travel arrangements.
The room was clean, extra towels were provided on request (which was handy as we went through them pretty quickly with all the showers we were having after runs and walks) and the beds were comfortable. What more could you ask?
Kelvingrove Park is just a 2 minute walk up the road. This is a little oasis within an otherwise busy part of town. I spent the early mornings running round the entire park and can confirm that some of the slopes are every bit as steep to run up as they look.
The Art gallery and Museum are situated within the park, though they will need to be visited on the next stay as our week was pretty full and didnt allow for a full investigation on this occasion. We did manage to visit the Transport Museum across the road from the Art Gallery, which will certainly bring the memories flooding back to those of a vintage age (I include myself in this as I kept seeing cars that my Father owned). An accessable car park behind the hotel is another major plus point for such a location, as every other parking space in that part of town is pay and display (for a maximum of 3 hours, which is hardly ideal).
The bus route in to town runs outside the hotel, for those not wishing to burn off the copious breakfast, and would be handy if it rains (what, in Scotland I hear you ask!!!).
All in all this was a pleasant stay at a pleasant hotel run by pleasant staff.
