This hotel was supposed to be a real treat, but ended up, well, kind of okay.
The building is bold architecturally, and location is great. Rooms are a good size and public spaces are open and interesting. The lifts are fun and the swimming pool lovely. Room curtains cut out an incredible amount of light.
However…
The room was pretty tired, with the carpet looking like several Indian takeaways had been spilled over the years. The mattress was simply knackered. Door was very difficult to shut. No Radio 4! The ventilation system was much too noisy, indeed, our friends next door asked to be moved (at 4-00 am) becuase of noise (as an aside, he is a consultant engineer on sound and accoustics - spent the night analysing the problem and coming up with solutions). Bath was so slow to fill that I gave up after fifteen minutes; shower a dribble too, so went down to the pool.
The corridor was terrible – much left over food (on plates, trays and trolleys) was outside rooms for many hours (until, in fact, our friends suggested at reception that it could do with a clear). Once the food was removed there was an extension lead left lying around overnight and through the next morning (trip hazard?).
The pool changing area was ‘orrible – paper towels etc. in little soggy piles all over. And why on Earth should I give my employer’s details in order to use the pool?
Breakfast had a great choice; I particularly enjoyed marinated herring. Covered warming dishes are not always appropriate, though, making particularly the hash browns seriously soggy.
Staff were brilliant when approached, from the lovely doorman, through reception and restaurant, we always enjoyed our interactions. There is a marked lack of proactive attention, though.
Our friends, who had a change of room, were not charged. An excellent gesture as it was simply automatically applied. We didn’t grumble, because there was nothing major wrong, just a succession of little issues, which overall left us wishing we’d stayed elsewhere.
In our final analysis, we were looking for a good value special weekend (we spent twenty hours travelling to enjoy 24 hours together) rather than a cheap night out. Glasgow is an excellent base and we’ll do it again, but not at the Radisson.
