Well it started badly - booked a weekend and paid for it at that time, but on check-in the first thing they wanted to do was get my credit card from me so they could charge me again. The check-in clerk (Denis) was absolutely insistent that we hadn't paid, when I told him we had paid through Expedia he looked like he had never heard of them (this is somebody who works in the hotel industry we're talking about, remember). Showing him the printed itinery from Expedia (which confirmed "payment taken at time of booking") and he just didn't understand what I was showing him. Eventually got to speak to the manager (Billy) who was a bit more clued up, said we didn't owe them anything, and gave us the key to the room.
And fair enough, the room was nice. Big, with the bed on a mezzanine upstairs, and a wardrobe, desk, chair, sofa, TV, CD player, etc. downstairs, along with the bathroom. Bathroom was a good size, with a decent sized shower that had jets too - great!
As mentioned, the (very comfy) bed was upstairs on the mezzanine, with another wardrobe and a very small portable TV perched on a table that looked like it had been put there as an afterthought. Which gave it the feel of a cheap B&B, not a four-star hotel.
One reason we had to watch TV in bed is that the sofa for watching the big TV was filthy, dozens of stains on it (see photo accompanying this review), and as soon as you start thinking about where these might have come from you wouldn't want to sit on it either! This isn't just a case of housekeeping "overlooking" something, this is months, if not years, of neglecting their guests' rooms, of not being bothered.
As every other review also mentions, the hotel's location is aboslutely brilliant for the city centre. This also means it's in the heart of things when pubs & clubs chuck-out in the wee small hours. Which should be fine if the place is double-glazed, except that when the window was tight shut it still wasn't sealed (again, see photo). This room looks out over a busy road, with buses, cars, sirens, etc. at all times of the day and night - they really should have fixed this as I can't believe we were the first people to have noticed it.
Didn't eat in the hotel, so can't comment here.
This could be a great hotel, but is let down by an absence of thought and of care. Would I stay here again? Of course not! As an exiled Glaswegian I visit the city several times every year, and there are plenty of better hotels better than this one to pick from.
