Hi.
My husband booked a surprise for our anniversary in July - a weekend for 2 in Langs Hotel, Glasgow, 7 - 9 September 2007.
Naturally in order to get myself in the "spirit" I sought information from Trip Advisor, and I must admit that I was quite horrified to find so many negative comments about this hotele.g. Poor decoration to non existant breakfasts etc...
I am pleased to report that there was absolutely nothing negative about the hotel, staff decor or breakfasts - during our stay at any rate!
We arrived at the hotel reception on Friday evening, having flown over from Belfast, and locating the bus to Central Station without any mishaps. The Hotel was only a few minutes away from the "drop off point" - a return cost £ £6.30 (You can check rates [--] at any time I think!) For general information the single is £3.95 / 10 journeys = £28.00.
The receptionist at Langs was extremely pleasant and chuckled at my suggestion that the waterfall feature directly behind her must be an "inconvenience" if she ever felt the need to use the "conveniences" but found herself too busy to leave the desk,
(if you know what I mean).
We were allocated Room 105 and proceeded via the lift to the room on the first floor. Depsite all the reviews about poor decor, small rooms etc. we were delighted to find ourselves in a split level room, which was tasteful. Lower level: bathroom (despite not having a bath) had a large cubicle and powershower with the other usual bit and bobs... shampoo, shower cap etc. An area with a sofa, large remote t.v., in a display cabinet with tea/ coffee facilities and biscuits, desk and chair. Upper level: a "very firm" double bed, 2 bedside cabinets, small corner wardrobe and smaller t.v. with remote. The window in the room was large and the view was the Clock "on legs" and the Royal Concert Gallery - we were entertained during the early part of the evening when the "Black Ties" gathered for their pre-concert aperatifs!
So - no complaints about the room. I suppose if I were "picky" I could suggest the lights above the bed were much too bright, or the stairs were extremely steep - but neither of these caused us a problem.. especially considering we were only there 2 nights. Ohh, I've just remembered that our kettle "blew up" on our last morning..... and I didn't inform reception - oh dear.... I hope the next guests found a working replacement installed in time for their use!
Breakfast:
Excellent! On both mornings we were welcomed by Breakfast Manager - Graham Warner - and in my opinion this man would be an asset to any Hotel! He was perfectly presented and had a warm, freindly and certainly approachable personality. He allocated us a window seat and promptly brought our coffee after providing an explanation of service style.
My husband (unlike me) loves a cooked breakfast, and he wasn't disappointed - tatty bread and bacon, sausages and the like more than satisfied his appetite. As for me - there was an interesting variety of juice (not just the run of the mill flavours), cereals, yoghurt,s toast / and a patisserie selection - I thought it was really good..... fresh strawberries, pineapple; prunes apricots and nuts (oh.. I loved the praulines) were frequently replenished, and positioned with great care.
The restaurant decor was quite lovely (see photo's) and certainly "different. It was clean, tidy and maintained as ship-shape throughout the entire service by the alert staff.
I can't make any comment about room service breakfast - Iand whilst I understand some guests have had problems with this.... I must admit that I ususally prefer to sample the restaurant rather then stay in the bedroom at breakfast time. The fact that Langs Hotel offer extended service time for breakfast helped to persuade me on morning 2 -a great idea for tourists. In my experience it seems that city hotels ususally forget that guests may use accommodation services for a rest - I think it's refreshing that someone (Graham Warner in this case) has at last realised that we may not want to rise before 0930am which is frequently the cut-off time!
So - there you are .... we thought Langs was a great centrally located Hotel in Glasgow thus making sight-seeing a pleasure, whilst providing a comfortable and friendly base.
Congratulations Langs - especially on your appointment of such a dedicated and professional Breakfast Manager (his son wasn't bad looking either)!
