It wasn't the worst hotel ever but it definitely wasn't what I expected.

First of all it smelt as we walked in which was a bit off putting. We got to our room which was big and had a huge bathroom but I think that was all it had going for it.

The window only opened a bit and was a pain to get open/closed - considering the fact the room was hot anyway was a total pain. Even when the temperature had dropped, the room was still really hot. The view from the window was a bit of derelict land which looked quite scary. The TV remote didn't work and the TV didn't work properly - the only way to change channel was to press the channel - button (through about 80 empty channels!!)

The worst thing was the noise! During the night there was what sounded like an air conditioning unit (which was obviously not used in the hotel cos it was so hot) that switched on noisily every 15 minutes and went off after rattling for 5 minutes or so. Really annoying!

I wouldn't recommend it - good job it was so cheap!!

This place is right down in the grimy center of town on the bad side of the central train station. It's on a noisy street, above a noisy pub. The room was partially finished, with unpainted plaster smeared on walls, marks and scrapes from stolen artwork, window lock broken off, broken tiles on the bathroom floor, no place to hang the toilet paper, no counter at the sink to put anything, clogged outlet in the shower so that it filled like a pool, TV with no remote (not made for one) perched about 7 feet (2m) off the floor right next to the bed, so you looked up at it as though from the first row of a movie theater (cinema). Did I mention the high level of noise from main-drag Argyle street at all hours? (I'm used to big-city noise - this was extreme) This despite the solid-wood 'window shades' and their broken lock that made the place feel like a tomb. The room wasn't serviced during the day. Checkout was demanded at 10:30AM with various nebulous threats left hanging if we were late at all. Lost the details of our reservation, so was glad I'd printed the proof of my online reservation. There are much nicer places quite close by and much more interesting parts of Glasgow to see. Spend the extra 5p and stay there!

Scruffy, Sleazy and Tacky. This hotel was sold to us as a 3 star. Who ever did the rating must have been blind. The photographs and description bear no resemblance to the hotel whatsoever. The rooms hadnt seen a vacuum for some time. Dont be taken in by the description of designer theme throughout. Avoid this hotel like the plague.

If your looking for a very basic clean hotel in the heart of the city centre of Glasgow this is the place to go. My wife, son and myslef stayed in both a double and single room and we have no complaints what so ever. It was clean, very friendly and very reasonable. It is ideally situated for both the centre shopping as well as the local rail service. Everything is within walking distance and the staff are extremely friendly. The local indian restaurant the Spice Garden is a must. I have stayed in many hotels (4 star +) and I think for the numberof stars (2) that this hotel is given it is very much under rated. If your looking for a cheap, clean and friendly location in Glasgow this is the place to go!

My boyfriend and I stayed the long weekend end of May 2006 at Alexander Thompson and was really surprised to read the previous reviews that said it was a disgusting hotel. Our room was clean and unexpectedly huge, the double bed was more comfortable than ours at home and had clean soft linen, we had huge french door style windows and a massive clean bathroom (no leaks, no drainage or toilet issues). It was much more than I expected for a 1 to 2 star hotel, and the unlimited hot english breakfasts filled us up well into the afternoon. Its location is fantastic - we thought it was supposed to be on top of a nightclub and beside the Glasgow Central station (ie. lots of noise through the night) but instead found it was a minute or two from the station so it was perfectly located for nightlife/shopping. It's certainly no five star palace, but for a clean, pleasant and bit-better-than-no-frills place this is perfect and I would definitely stay there again. The staff were pleasant and helpful at all times. The rate for a double room posted in the hotel is £80, but we booked ours for £40 per night for the room by shopping around different hotel websites. I think the place must have been refurbished or changed management since the recent bad reviews (or we were unwittingly given the dead-body room hence the cheap price for great room - doubt it though). I'd definitely stay here again.
