I thought this hotel was reasonable for the price paid, and the 2* rating is an accurate rating. The room was shabby, and the bathroom could have done with a more thorough clean, but I assume I had one of the cheaper, non-refurbished rooms as it looked nothing like the rather swanky pictures on the website. However, the lounge, bar, and breakfast room were very pleasant, and there was free wireless internet, which is a big bonus when many of the more up-market hotels charge a lot for this. The staff were all very friendly and helpful, and the location is convenient, especially for Cenral Station. No toiletries were provided, but there is a 24-hour Tesco a few doors away, so this wasn't too inconvenient. I'd definitely stay here again, but only when on business and so not spending a lot of time in the room. If you're looking for a bit more comfort, then either check in advance that you're getting an executive room, or pay a lot more for a bigger 3-4* hotel.

While this hotel offers a great location by the train station, the area immediately around is mostly boarded up buildings. Our first room was dismal - dirty with saggy bed, small and windows didn't lock nor the door so we requested to be moved. Next room was an "upgrade" and it was quite large, with a decent bath, but again, cleanliness is an issue from rooms to hallways, etc. Our "view" was to a garbage dump below. And to boot, at the "breakfast" I got a terrible bout of food poisoning. Would not recommend this hotel in any way.

Judging by the reviews of this hotel, I think maybe some of the rooms are radically different than others. People are complaining about the photos being fake and their rooms a disgrace. Maybe some rooms have been remodeled and some have not. I stayed on the fifth floor as I recall, and my room was very nice. I have included photos of the room I stayed in. I paid 50 pounds per night for a triple room (the hotel charged me as soon as I booked my stay, they didn’t wait until I got there). I think this hotel was the best value out of the 9 hotels I stayed at on this trip all over the UK and in Ireland. In the lobby behind the front desk there is a sign with prices on it which were much higher than what I paid. I don’t recall exactly what the sign said (maybe 75 pounds for a double?) but I would advise you to book ahead of time to guarantee your rate.

Alexander Thompson is conveniently located right outside Glasgow Central station. The room was giant and the bathroom was about as big as the entire hotel room I stayed in when I was in London. The shower had some confusing controls for the water. At one point, I could only get the shower to turn on if the tub faucet was also on. After I finished showering my first night, I could not figure out any way to turn the water off, I could only shift it between the shower head and the tub faucet. Eventually I got it to turn off but it was like a puzzle.

On our second day, housekeeping took our towels and did not replace them. I tried to call the front desk, but the phone in the room didn’t work. So I walked down to the front desk and explained the situation and I was told I would have to wait until 6:00 PM for the housekeeping staff to arrive. The lady at the front desk apparently did not have access to towels. She did manage to find me one towel and she wasn’t sure if it was clean or dirty, but she looked at it and she said she thought it was clean. When I got to my room and unfolded it, I saw that it was definitely not clean. I also noticed a couple of stains on the furniture in my room (see my photos).

There was no way to close my room door quietly and I was afraid I would disturb other guests every time I opened and closed the door. But I noticed in the two nights I was there that my room was very quiet. I didn’t hear a peep out of anyone else in adjacent rooms even though it seems like I should have been able to hear doors opening and closing. Either my end of the hallway was deserted or this place has thick walls. Despite the problems I had which I consider relatively minor, I thought the room was nice (and large!) and the price made it a good deal. I would stay here again.

  • Liked — Huge room, nice big bathroom, reasonable price
  • Disliked — Service was marginal, furniture had some unsightly stains

I booked this hotel for a cheap girls weekend away. It was quite sufficiant for that purpose it was handy for the main shopping areas and was well situated for eating out and for pubs and clubs. For the price i paid which was 28.50 per head (there were five of us) i wasn't expecting it to be top notch but there are a few wee things that i wasn't too happy with the doors make an awful noise when closing especially through the night. We had really loud neighbours who spent most of the night arguing, followed by banging doors! I also drew the short straw and had the bed by the window, which we had to keep open all night due to the heat in the hotel. Not very good on a saturday night, at closing time for the local pubs! as you can imagine! but other than that we enjoyed our stay and would go back again, if we were staying in glasgow overnight!

I really did not feel safe in this hotel. There were teenagers slamming doors going in and out all night and then the people in the room next door had an arguement for around 30 mins followed by loud make up sex. Despite a hall full of people being kept awake, no one from the hotel bothered to come up and tell them to shut up so others could sleep. The room was clean enough but looked liked it had been slapped together that morning, there were no bedside tables, joins didn't match etc. My biggest gripe was the toilet. For some reason the base of the toilet sat up on a ledge of about 6 inches because it seems that this was an easier option than adjusting the pipe to have the toilet sit on the floor where it should be. It made going to the toilet for some one of average height a nightmare as my legs were suspended in mid air. I literally had to hoist myself onto the seat. Breakfast was ok but I didn't really have time to look around and survey the room as I just wanted leave, so I scoffed my food and hightailed it out of there.

  • Liked — IT WAS BETTER THAN SLEEPING IN THE CAR!
  • Disliked — THE TOILET
