The wife and I were in Glasgow on a city break from Thursday 27th Feb to Sunday 2nd March and I had booked a table at the Punjabi for the Saturday night at 9pm. We live in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, so a trip to Scotland is a bit of a trek and so we like to make the most of our time there.
Call it fate, coincidence or great customer service but we ended up being seated at the same table as our last visit on 2nd November 2013.
After ordering and receiving our drinks 2 huge poppadoms with an onion and tomato pickle arrived; complimentary.
I was hoping to speak to the owner as we had had a good chat the last time we were in but he was nowhere to be seen. Then suddenly like the shopkeeper from Mr. Benn he appeared, recognised me straight away and from then on seemed to be our very own personal waiter.
For starters we had the haggis pakoras and meat samosas which the wife and I shared. 8 pieces of the haggis and 3 samosas done to perfection being served with a little salad, slice of lemon and a pink raita; yes pink but once you get over the colour it is very tasty.
For main course I asked the advice of our new best mate waiter the owner, asking him if dish A was spicy and what about dish B? He suggested I try the South Indian Chicken Garlic Chilli, which I did. Wifey had Chicken Rogan Josh. We shared a boiled rice and a nan bread.
The chicken for both meals was fall apart tender, juicy and cooked perfectly and my chilli garlic chicken had just the right amount of heat to form a drop of sweat on my brow without overpowering the tastebuds. Rice hot and fluffy and the nan bread is just divine, not at all doughy and heavy like most nans but light, crispy, airey yet it soaks up the curry sauce perfectly.
To round the meal off we had an ice cream dish in a tall glass.
Would we go back? Absolutely, the food, the service cannot be faulted.
One negative point is the price of the drinks but you can't have it all and so i won't be put off going back to the Punjabi; in fact i am planning my next trip now.
