I stayed at the Glasgow Hilton Grosvenor for 2 nights in August. The check-in was fine and as Hilton Honours members we were offered a drink (water or whisky!) on arrival. My husband is a Silver member and I’m a Gold member but still we received no extra benefits or welcome! We were using my husband’s Hilton points and I guess therefore as not revenue customers we weren’t spending enough.

The hotel was fine, perhaps a little old-fashioned in terms of style and décor but nothing to fault. OK really by anyone’s basic standards. We were able to check-into to our room early which was nice. The main entrance is at the back of the hotel (the front looks nice) and the back is just a like a box next to as supermarket car park. There are some rather nice Hilton hotels (trendy and up-to-date) but the Grosvenor has still some improvements to make.

We had a twin room (no doubles left), the room it self was ok but we had no air-con (you cannot open the windows either) or minibar! A slight disappointment! We always like a glass of wine or a beer in the evenings. The windows were big and nice but could do with a clean.

The beds were comfortable and the bathroom was clean and tidy. The carpet could do with a change but all in all, our room and the hotel were ok. We didn’t eat or drink at the hotel as there are plenty of places to try on Byres Road. The West End area is nice (I liked it more than the city centre) and nearby Ashton Lane has some trendy bars and restaurants.

Stayed for 2 nights while attending a wedding nearby, and paid for the room using Hilton points.

This hotel is in a great location in the heart of the West End, which is a much more pleasant area than the city centre (in my opinion). Cab to centre was less than 5GBP, there is also a subway station (Hillhead) about 300 metres away.

Although the official check-in time was 3pm, it was a pleasant surprise to find the room available at 1.30pm, which made our plans a lot easier. Check-in staff were efficient, and as others have noted, the whisky was a welcome extra !

The hotel decor in the public areas is typical 'old-school' dark wood, chintzy furniture and loud patterned carpets, not to my taste, but it was in good condition.

The room was OK decor-wise, neutral, with a nice traditional tiled bathroom. It was of an average size. Huge windows overlooking the main road, which was not too noisy as the double glazing was effective. One problem was that there were no opening windows and NO AIR-CON, which made the room very stuffy. Also, where was the mini-bar ?! Perhaps other rooms might be better equipped, but ours (114) wasn't.

Did not eat at the hotel, as there were numerous options nearby, however the lobby smelt very strongly of fried food, which seemed a bit ominous.

I would probably not stay here again if I were paying for the room, however it was adequate and not unpleasant.

What a shame. The hotel has an excellent location, close to the university, the botanical garden, and local shops. I stayed for just one night to attend a wedding in town, and the Grosvenor Hilton offered itself because of its central location. While ok by anyone’s standards, it just does nor live up to the Hilton brand and is overpriced for what it delivers. On arrival, the porter did not offer to help carry the luggage up the stairs, but stood and stared in the air –one inattentive member of staff doth not bad service make, but unfortunately, this was not be the last instance of bad service in my 16-hour stay. Coming back from a function at about 2.00am, I found that all front doors were locked with no staff around to let me in. I waited for a few minutes, but no staff member was to be seen at reception or in the lobby area. Finally, I went around the other side of the hotel (the side with the nice façade you can see on the photos) and tried different doors there, all of which were locked. In the process, I finally found a doorbell, and after two to three rings and five minutes later, someone who appeared to be restaurant or bar staff heard or noticed me and let me in. Clearly not a warm welcome. The 24-hour menu, which offers basic items from the room service menu, was short, but alright, yet I was told that no ciabatta was available, only plain white toast bread –at the same price. Unwilling to pay GBP 8.00 for two slices of white bread with a slice of roast beef, and finding that even standard fast food such as chips or pizza was not available, I chose to go without. In the morning, I was woken up before 10.00 am by the room maid’s persistent knocking. Overall, the room itself was nice, had big windows and was well furnished. The bathroom was good, too. The point of the phone beside the loo escaped me, but I guess there’s a good reason. Staff were much more friendly when I checked out, offered to store luggage, call cab etc, but this was the first time I had ever bothered to leave feedback, in this case negative. You would get the same service at a standard hotel for less money, and as this is a Hilton and you are not paying Travelodge prices, this was disappointing. I would not choose to go back, given a choice.

Stayed at the hotel on April 11, 2006. Service was nice - welcome glass of whisky was a nice touch - but the room could have been slightly better maintained. The mattress was rather uncomfortable, and the duvet cover had cigarette burns! Such a thing is not consistent with Hilton properties, and I assume that staff were aware of the cigarette burns as no effort was made to hide them.

Didn't eat there as there are so many nice restaurants on and around Byres Road that are much better value than what is on offer at the Grosvenor.

From the previous reviews, it would seem that the Glasgow Grosvenor Hilton has done some renovations and upgrading. The elevators appear to be new and have the annoying feature of speaking to you about every "elevator event."

I paid $210.60 per night and the room was very nice, except that I had a confirmed non-smoking reservation, but was placed in a smoking room. The room was large, sunny, nicely and newly decorated with a huge bed with fine linens and large and plentiful pillows. It did not smell of smoke.

The self-service "full Scottish breakfast" came with the room and was more than ample in every way. The cook staff was willing to make eggs to order any way possible.

The photographs that are published of the hotel are a bit mis-leading. The nineteenth century row houses that are now the façade of the hotel are just that—façade! The old houses and all their features were demolished and a 1970s style hotel is hiding behind them. That said, the hotel is comfortable and, for me, with an interest in the Hunterian Museum and the Mackintosh House, very well-located.

I am becoming increasingly testy about higher end hotels that do not provide free internet access. The Grosvenor has one terminal available to guests at 11 British pence per minute. I'm sorry folks, but if Motel 6 can provide free service, so can Hilton. Free the intenet and GIVE me my e-mail.

I was charmed, however, when I asked if the desk could sell me stamps for two postcards and they offered to post them at no cost.
