“Needs to go upmarket”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2012

Took a return trip from Portsmouth to Swanage. Depending on one's age the Waverley will mean different things to different people. For me it recreates the last days of the paddle steamers from the 1960s. Having previously experienced the ship in the 1980s (fighting the tide both ways from Tower Bridge to Ramsgate and back), I went prepared with food and a flexible approach to the schedule. This time the ship was only 30 minutes late on its return and the food didn't run out. It's a nostalgic experience and that is also the Waverley's problem. The ship needs a good income to remain afloat, but all the effort seems to be focused on operating the ship, rather than marketing an experience. The Waverley needs to appeal to a broader range of trippers. One suggestion would be a 'Pullman' style catering experience which could be pre-booked as a package online (the website needs professional input: it's very poor). There are are other improvements that could be made, but above all the the charity needs to bring in outside expertise to create a package that appeals to a wider range of potential customers. Quite simply the Waverley will not have a future if it simply fails to move on. That would be a great shame as it really is a wonderful ship.

“A full day out”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2012

We have just arrived back in Swanange. We left at 11:00 this morning and returned at 20:30 this evening. We sailed to Bournemouth, Yarmouth and the most amazing part, around the IOW. To see the needles as never seen before - unless by boat. Fantastic and lots and lots of photos. The catering was good. No doubt that the boat was crowded and seating a problem on a cold windy day. The chairs in the observation lounge are too many and therefore too crowded.

Our only criticism was the lack of information about timings on the way back. It was obvious that we were running late and no doubt sea conditions accounted for that but a new ETA would have been appreciated as we were 45 minutes late.

“A Grand Day Out!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2012

Booked online three days before the trip having checked the local weather forecast. Joined at Portsmouth Harbour and couldn’t believe the queue of passengers would all fit as there were already people who had boarded at Southampton. The cruise to Yarmouth and around the Isle of Wight was excellent and the commentary about the various places en-route was very informative. We took our own picnic so can’t comment on the food but hot drinks were readily available and reasonably priced. There were various places to sit throughout the ship but we spent most of the time on deck as we wanted to enjoy the views and lovely weather. The engine room and ‘behind the scenes’ are intriguing and immaculately maintained. Initially we thought the £45 return trip a little expensive but it was well worth it to keep this unique piece of history in working order and it was a great day out which will be remembered for a long time.

“Brilliant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2012

Brilliant day and wonderful outing, scenery and food was great and there was a small Scottish band on board. We also had a wedding party on board who were met by a piper, the best man and groom at one of the stops, where they got off to go to the church. We all cheered.
