We stayed at the City Inn for 3 nights on a room only basis. When we checked in we asked for a (upgrade) river view and got one no problem - the area is currently undergoing a large amount of re-development and so the view of the river was OK but basically looked out onto a building site opposite!
The hotel is slightly away from the city centre but a taxi only costs £3 - £4 to the main attractions. There is also the SECC rail station approx 5-10 minutes walk away. The hotel is very quiet at night.
Rooms are small but well decorated. Bathrooms are also small but well equipped (CD, DVD, flat screen TV). They're fine for a few nights. We didn't eat at the hotel though the menu etc looked nice. (Weatherspoons in town do a traditional breakfast with tea/coffee for 2 for just £5.23)
Check in/out was efficient and courteous. Complimentary parking included - you really don't need your car to get around - walk during the day or taxi/train at night. The hotel reception will get you a taxi which usually arrives within minutes.
Glasgow itself is a brilliant city with many excellent bars & restaurants (Cafe Adaluz for tapas; Paperinos' for pizza/pasta; Smiths or Metropolitan for lunch). Lots of art gallerys, museums, interesting buildings, etc.
Friendly locals though you may need a translator at times!
