Travelling with my husband and 2 yr old.
When we first arrived at City Inn (after a long days travel and standing at a conference) we were welcomed by great door staff who really helped, carrying bags, holding doors etc. We booked in quite quickly seeing that everyone from the conference had just left SECC (be warned, City Inn is packed when there is an event on, and this causes the problems) and went up to our room, helped again by the wonderful door staff.
I must say, it was clean and tidy. Not child friendly, but we accept that hotel rooms can't be, we have to do the blocking the mini bar, covering power sockets etc.
Trouble started when we went for breakfast the following morning. Obviously a change of staff. We had to wait 10 min just standing and hoping that a waiter would actually acknowledge our looks and "good mornings" we offered, 8 times we were passed without so much as a grunt in our direction. We were informed that they were "too busy to serve breakfast at the moment", only because tables were left dirty and staff couldn't be bothered to clean them, so were asked to wait in the bar until a table was free.
25 minutes passed. Other people who were asked to wait after us were shown to tables before us. My husband had to leave to open his exhibition space before we were placed, so that was the price of his breakfast up our shirt. We were finally placed, and when i asked for a highchair I was REFUSED.
It was a self service style continental buffet, with hot food order. Have you ever tried to take a 2 yr old by the hand, and serve fruit, cereal and toast, with juice etc. The waiters saw that we were struggling, but decided to carry on with their conversation rather than actually help! Because the service had been busy, there was hardly anything edible left (mini pastries had dried out, only brown apple left in fruit salad etc, only grapefruit juice left out) and when i asked for apple juice, I was given such a dirty look!
The hot breakfast was, well, awful. The bacon on my sons breakfast had been shown a heat source, was just a fatty lump, scrambled eggs cold have bounced across the clyde. I have plumped for smoked salmon and scrambled eggs... I have never been served smoked salmon still with most of the skin on! Even the lemon on the side looked sorry for itself! 95% of it was left.
More so, my hubby very kindly took my son for a drink, at 6pm downstairs to let me have a brief rest before dinner. After waiting 15 minutes to be served a drink IN THE BAR, they sat down. He was then approached by the man who served the drinks to be told that children were not allowed in the bar. Now tell me, this guy could see DH had a toddler, could understand that an orange squash was for a child, so why serve him in the first place? We have never been turffed out of a hotel bar, and I have never heard of this not being allowed to have a 2 yr old in a bar at 6pm? So they couldn't relax there, so DH took son out for a walk.
The different door guy actually watched DH struggling with the heavy door, and then steps AS THERE IS NO FLAT ACCESS at the front of the hotel. These are large steps, 3 of them, no proper handrails etc, but with a pram near impossible. Other guests came to his rescue, both in and out of the property, whislt concierge and doorman stood and watched whilst in deep conversation!
Breakfast was the same fiasco, but with two adults so at least we didn't have a toddler either wandering round with hot plates being served, or left alone at the table. At least we were seated straight away, but only because it was later in the morning. Its clear that the restaurant was not built for the numbers which the hotel caters for.
Some staff are just wonderful and brilliant, would go out of their way to help, but others, quite frankly, couldn't give a toss about customer care or looking after guests, paying quite alot for shabby service.
