“Friendly and clean”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2014

My mother stayed here for the weekend and had a lovely time - she found it clean and comfortable with a good breakfast. She has a bit of a bad back and uses a stick to get about, and had to be careful with the stairs leading to the hotel but on her way off, Sandra, the manageress, helped her down with her bags and into the taxi. Sandra is a real gem and has time for everyone in spite of being very busy. Thanks a lot on behalf of my mother!

I've stayed here 3 times now and have just booked my 4th visit! I've always stayed in a small double room at about £40, working out to just over £20 per person. This is a fantastic price for an impeccably clean room, with towels, soap and tea and coffee making facilities, as well as internet access. There are TVs but I've found these don't always work, or that the signal isn't there. But this doesn't really matter, because you can just use the free internet to stream shows on a phone/tablet/laptop. Check in is quick and east and you pay on arrival, meaning all you have to do when you're leaving is drop off your keys in a safety box. This is convenient and hassle free. Not only this, but a full breakfast is provided in the morning, and the hotel is central to the beautiful West End of town, next door to the Botanic Gardens. Hillhead subway is just a few minutes walk away, creating quick links to the city centre and south side. The only downside would be that the rooms are a bit dated and that the shower and toilet facilities are communal. But in reality this really isn't a problem. There are several toilets and showers shared by the rooms, and I've never found there to be a significant wait time. The facilities are also clean and well stocked. On weekends you can sometimes hear people late at night, but again this wasn't really a problem and never caused me any sleep disturbance. All round, this is a fantastic hotel.

We were looking for somewhere to cheap to stay for a couple of nights in Glasgow. We were literally just using the room to sleep in. The bed is comfortable, can't complain about that. Breakfast in the morning was also good, we were expecting something that wasn't so good seeing as we hadn't paid that much for the room.

Staff are friendly.

We got a en-suite room, as we didn't want to share bathroom facilities. The en-suite is small, and there isn't much room in the shower either. Apart from that a great stay, thanks.

A great bargain close to the lively Byres Road area and so extremeley well located - it's also not far from Hillhead stop of Glasgow's 'Clockwork Orange' subway system. It's old fashioned in style but a handsome townhouse nonetheless. I wouldn't have fancied sharing a bathroom as many have to and facilities in my room were exemplary including a multi-channelled TV. For the price, a really good option.

We were looking for a Hotel in the West End of Glasgow to visit our sons in that area and after reviewing Trip Advisor plumped for the Kelvin Hotel. On Arrival we found parking spaces at a premium in a narrow street but were lucky to find a small space right outside the front door and an overnight parking of £2. We paid for the ensuite room which was down stairs. The Room was clean and fresh towelling and a small flat screen t.v which at times, probably due to being basement level struggles to find a signal. The room was warm and the bed comfy and had a good sleep although my wife found a small hole in her sheet at her side. Breakfast order was taken promptly and there was various options of fruit and cereal. We opted for the cooked breakfast and were supplied with copious amounts of toast. Breakfast was 1 sausage. 1 piece of bacon, 1 tomato and 1 egg. They were good qualitybut my only criticism was I Like my eggs soft but this one was verging on hard. All in all, for the price it was great value for money and would definitely stay here again if required

Room Tip: Great Location for the West End of Glasgow and definitely value for money

The Room: The Kelvin is a great value. I stayed for 10 days, and had a comfortable, quiet room with clean towels, everything I needed to make tea and coffee, an en suite bathroom with a shower, free WiFi, and a flat screen TV with good reception and plenty of Freeview channels. The room also has a little electric fireplace, in addition to the regular heater. For someone like me who likes to sleep with the window open, that meant I could still stay warm while enjoying the fresh air. I was in room 15, on the very top floor.

The Location: The Kelvin Hotel is located near the intersection of Great Western Road and Byers Road in the West End of Glasgow. This location puts you within walking distance of dozens of wonderful restaurants and shops right in the neighborhood, right around the corner from the Botanic Gardens, and just a few blocks from the Hillhead Underground station (£2.60 for a return ticket, good all day) to get you to the City Center, Buchanan Street, and the Queens Street rail station. I pre-booked my taxi online both to and from the Glasgow airport through Glasgow Taxi, and it was a £19 flat rate.

A few things to keep in mind when booking here. I won't call them negatives, because it really depends on the type of traveler you are. If you're a traveler who wants the hotel staff to be fully present 100% of the time, to never have to climb stairs, and room service, booking one of the larger chain hotels might be a better fit. If you're a low maintenance traveler who simply wants a clean, comfortable room at a good value; to be close to dining and entertainment options; and staff that pretty much stays out of your hair unless you really need something, this is your place.

- There is no lift. My room was at the top of two windy flights of stairs, so if you have disabilities that would make climbing those stairs difficult, you might verify that you're getting a first floor room.
- The front steps are a little... tricky. I have some balance issues and the two little sets of steps going up to the front door, especially when it was rainy, were a little hairy. I never fell, but the 2nd set of steps going up from the sidewalk have a definite slope to them which made me feel a little like I might be slipping backwards. They aren't at all prohibitive to me wanting to stay here again, though. Just something to be aware of if you have any issues with going up and down steps.
- You'll get a key to the front door as well as a key to your room. If you plan on being out all day shopping and coming back with armloads of shopping bags, there might be a bit of fumbling for your key. I'm sure you could just ring the doorbell and someone would come open it for you, though, if it's really an issue.
- If you're not an early riser, don't plan on having breakfast there. One of the things I enjoy most about being on vacation is sleeping in. I'm not a "bound out of bed with the sun" kind of girl, so I never got to enjoy the breakfast at the hotel. That was kind of a bummer. Just be aware that if you want breakfast there, you'll need to be up before 845am. The good news is that there is a really lovely crepe shop just a block or so down Byers Road from Great Western. If you wake up late and hungry for something breakfasty, they have good coffee and delicious savory and sweet crepes, plus free WiFi.
- There's no front desk, so you won't really see the staff much unless you're around while they're cleaning rooms, or you're up for breakfast. I travel alone and really just want to be able to come and go to do my thing. The one time I had a question about something, I found someone to speak to. The rest of the time, I had no interaction and was just fine with that. Based on some of the other recent reviews I'm seeing here, if you really needed something there would definitely be someone around to assist.

I absolutely fell in love with Glasgow, and I hope I get to return. After 10 days, the Kelvin really felt like my home away from home, so I will definitely stay here again when I come back to Glasgow.

Room Tip: Rooms on the top floor seemed to be very quiet, but you'll have to climb stairs. Rooms on the gr...

Spent a lovely couple of nights here, in a decent area of the west end of Glasgow. Hotel is excellent value for money and Sandra is very helpful. The rooms have everything you need and are very clean. The subway is close, trains are frequent and cheap if you don't fancy the walk into the city. Taxi cost is £7 to the train station.
