I stayed at McLays for one night in July of 2005. The room was very cheap (with breakfast) and in a quiet neighborhood off the main street of Glasgow. I stayed in a single room. The carpet was dirty and the bathroom was uncomfortable to use.

I don't think the staff is negligent in its cleaning. It's just that the hotel is really old and needs to be renovated.

McLays Guest House is an absolute joke. I am sincerely surprised it survives as a buisiness. Upon our arrival to McLays, we payed for our two night stay (one should not pay for a room before seeing it). Our room was on the third floor in the left wing of the building. The hallway was dismal and dark and there were half empty beer bottles sitting about. The room itself had horribly dirty carpets, garbage under the desk from the previous inhabitant and was generally unclean. The bathroom was terrible, and again not clean. The towels and sheets appeared clean which was somewhat of a comfort. There was a hole in the bathroom roof, and the whole place was really shabby. They do not provide any complimentary shampoo or soap so if you do decide to stay there after reading these reviews, then bring your own. We never ate breakfast at McLays Guest House since we wanted to spend as little time there as possible. There are a lot of bed and breakfasts on the same street that look a lot nicer and in this case, it is well worth the extra pounds.

For anyone who is confused as to why the reviews for this place vary so much, it is because there are two halves to the hotel. The first time I stayed there, my room was to the RIGHT of reception. The room was nice enough, especially for the price, despite quite a lot of noise from the housecleaning staff in the morning. I would have recommended the hotel following my stay. In fact, I did, after moving to the city I recommended it to friends who had a similar experience with it.

However, when I got married and had a lot of family coming over, I recommended the hotel to my sister because the price was good and it had a family room. When they checked in, they were lead to the LEFT of reception to another wing of the hotel. The hallways were depressing and cramped and the room they were lead to was simply appalling. It looked like a prison dormitory, right down to the barbed wire outside the window. There was a boarded up door that exited out the back of the room that had obviously formerly served as the exit to the rubish bins out back. My sister and her family left after one night as the room was actually unsafe for the kids to stay in.

I spent a week apologising and trying to explain how shocking it was compared to the room I had stayed in. Basically, if you stay here, youre pressing your luck.

My girlfriend and I stayed here for three nights in Jan. 2005. The hotel is actually a combination of several old townhouses. The building is very old and it shows, but everything was clean and neat. Although some of the staff were a bit odd, they were nonetheless interesting. Hot breakfast is served every morning in one of three dining rooms. One block from many restaturants and bars, and just a short walk to the university part of town, the location was pretty good. We were travelling as students and booked the room through a hostel website; it was very inexpensive. Overall, we were very happy with the choice.
