My girlfriend and I stayed here for three nights in Jan. 2005. The hotel is actually a combination of several old townhouses. The building is very old and it shows, but everything was clean and neat. Although some of the staff were a bit odd, they were nonetheless interesting. Hot breakfast is served every morning in one of three dining rooms. One block from many restaturants and bars, and just a short walk to the university part of town, the location was pretty good. We were travelling as students and booked the room through a hostel website; it was very inexpensive. Overall, we were very happy with the choice.

my granddaughter and i arrived at mclays hotel after a 7hr train
journey looking forward to a nice rest before dinner.what we found
was a room with damaged wallpaper and pieces missing off the
walls and a stained carpet and a decidedly unfriendly person in
reception.we had no option but to seek alternative lodgings.
what made the situation worse was when we booked into the willows
hotel we found a room with a wardrobe and mirrors on the walls and
en suite shower and toilet ,nice decor and very clean carpet.
most of all these far superior surroundings came at a cheaper rate
and with a much more helpful staff.i shall tell all my friends where
to stay when in glasgow and will not be mclays.the saddest thing of all
is that mclays does nothing to enhance the reputation of a lovely city
like glasgow.disgusted and dissapointed

if you want somewhere that's cheap, comfortable and friendly, somewhere to sleep, which is relaxed about what time you come in and does great scottish breakfasts and you are not too bothered about anything else, then this will suit you. if you're rather picky about other people's hair in the basin, rather dirty looking carpet, rather amateurish d.i.y and having to move sideways to get into the room then frankly you need to stay at somewhere more upmarket. it would not suit someone more disabled then me, as I struggled with the flight of steps up to it, and there are even steps up to the lift, it is a rabbit warren of oddly shaped corridors, rooms fitted into every corner - hence quirky shaped walls, and one window which wouldn't shut and another which didn't open! the staff are friendly and helpful though perhaps as odd as the customers. the sheets and towels were clean though, and drink making supplies, toilet paper etc well supplied. good value for money

Stayed here on 21st August 2004. It is great value for money considering its very central location - only a few minutes from bus/rail stations and all the great shopping. We found the staff to be really friendly and helpful. The breakfast was plentiful and tasty (great potato cakes!). Although the decor definitely needs doing up, the bedroom and bathroom were clean. We met a couple of people who stay here whenever they visit Glasgow and I would also return. I would recommend McLay's to those on a budget.

I spent two nights in this guest house and I was very disappointed: the carpets were dirty, the room was noisy and there was no much privacy (you can hear your neighbour), also when leaving the room I was obliged to toast all the kitchen smells because the kitchen wa located nearby the rooms!!.
I booked and paid the room on-line and when I left the room at 4 am I was informed that the payment was still due... I had not enough pounds to pay the room and they refuse to accept Euros. Also, my credit card was not functioning because from time to time my bank updates their customer files and it is impossible to make payments. The consequence was that I MISSED MY PLANE at Prestwick Airport. I found a taxi driver who lend me some pounds to pay the hotel and I had to pay a very expensive taxi to get to the airport to take another plane!. The taxi driver told me that in the town Euros are widely accepted and he did not understood why they proceeded like that in this hotel.... when I got to the airport I could have some money in a cash machine with my credit card and paid the taxi driver....

I would not recommend this hotel to anyone!!
