We were six hours delayed flying into Glasgow so didn't arrive at this place until about 3 a.m. There were rowdy young people at the front door and the beleaguered desk person had to throw them out and threaten to call the police. The lobby was pitiful, shabby, worn, and the hallways were frighteningly filthy. We walked through five or six fire doors as we made it through a maze to get to our room which had stained, dirty walls and a non-working TV. The lumpy duvet and bed were clean but uncomfortable. This was the first hotel that I ever felt I had to sleep with thelights on to feel safe. I would NEVER go back to this place. We should have slept at the airport instead. The neighborhood was dark and hard to find, full of dirty alleys, graffiti, and deserted looking lots. Scary, icky place!
McLays, although described as a Guest House, is more on the lines of a Hostel. The reception area and corridors are neglected and are looking quite shabby. It reminded me of a pub in the times of when smoking was allowed, in that the paintwork, etc, had turned a browny yellow. The dining room was a bit tacky, and I was put off having cereal when I peeped in and had a look on the evening we arrived, and saw the cereal in bowls still out without cover!!! The cooked breakfast resembled what might be served in a transport caf.
On the positive side, It is in a very convenient location and is a very busy `international' establishment. Our room was clean and quite nice, at the back of the building, and our corridor seemed to be freshly painted and carpeted. Room 88. The lady on reception was very pleasant and helpful and it was a pleasure to chat to her. She kind of softens the blow of what you mind find after you check in!!! The man on reception at night is also a great guy, and he knows all the tricks of the trade, so watch out!! He very kindly provided me with ice packs for bee stings I'd had while in Sterling!

I only give this a 1 as there's no zero. Myself and 3 friends booked here to stay last night as we were going to the Bon Jovi concert at Hampden. On arrival my friend and I headed for our room, the lift is like a small cupboard which has "lift" stencilled on the door in felt tip pen, and you wouldn't have to be clostraphobic. Our room was filthy, stained curtains, carpet and bed linnen along with wallpaper peeling off the walls, holes in the wall, a broken shower and inches of dirt on surfaces. We immediately went down to reception to see if we could have another room but the receptionist was down right rude saying that it's a budget hotel and what do we expect, quite frankly I've stayed in cleaner hostels for half the price. Anyhow, she told us we had 15 minutes to decide if we wanted to stay or not as they had to fill the room if we were leaving, there was no offer of an apology or even an offer of someone coming to clean the room. We went back to our room and discussed whether we should stay but to be honest we really had no choice since the city was busy with the concert. Then we had a knock at the door and the housekeeper was there asking "what the problem was", she was abrupt, rude and ignorant, she immediately came in and commented that we had to tell her now if we were leaving so that the room could be cleaned and rented to someone else - yet again no hope of an apology. She also commented that we had been drinking and sitting "humming and haying" with each other over the situation, which to be frank we would have been doing regardless of whether we were drinking or not. We then asked to deal with the manager, when we answered the door to the manager she was stood with her hands on her hips - great body language!!! My friend complained about the room and we got the same crap about you get what you pay for, my friend actually ran her finger down the side of the door whilst speaking to the manager and an inch of dirt came off on her finger which she showed the manager. These people knew damn fine they could fill the rooms last night and make their money, there's no customer care here and I would advise to avoid this hotel at all costs.
The room which my two other friends were staying in was okay, it was clean and modern and well decorated, however it seems to be pot luck as to whether you will get an okay room or a complete hell hole. We took photos of the state of the room and will be writing to the owner to ask for a refund but this will probably be a waste of time. I would avoid this place at all costs if you want to enjoy your stay in Glasgow, believe me Glasgow has a lot more to offer than this.
This guest house is well located being not far from the centre. I've read people complaining about the area, but really for Glasgow it's fine!
Because I booked late and had to move every few nights, I actually slept in 3 different rooms. All of them were modern and clean enough. However, it was a bit cold at night in some of them, and there were no extra blankets in the rooms. Watch out for room 58 as there was a water pump or heater in the wall that made a random loud noise throughout the night. It may have been fixed by now since I did mention it at reception, but who knows!
Had to pay upfront each time I took a new room, which didn't bother me, but I know is a problem for some. Staff are very helpful, especially at breakfast where you can get a reasonably sized full breakfast. Very little space for parking, but good access to buses.
