We stayed at the Hillhead two nights. We took the overnight train from London, and arrived about 10 in the morning. The hardworking, but not particularly cheery breakfast lady/maid gave us our room early, which we appreciated.
The furnishings were old and very cheap to start with. The room was relatively clean, except for a big wet spot at the bathroom entrance. It may have been dye from the carpet, but it looked like blood on the sock of the person that stepped in it, and on the towels that we left on top the rest of our visit.
That wasn't the worst part of the bathroom. The machine that instantly heats water for the shower had been torn off the wall and wires were showing. There was a bathroom down the hall that they let us use, and they fixed (well, attached it back on the wall) our bathroom that day, but they should have noticed the problem when they cleaned the bathroom?!! I wonder if the previous visitor got mad at having to take cold showers and tore it off. The water never did heat in our room. The hot water to the sink didn't work, and the cold was only a trickle. The hall bathroom was fine.
The owner and his wife were nice--take their advice on the best Indian restaurants in town. The immediate location was rather run down, but a close walk to shopping, bus, and the university. This hotel has a lot of possibilities, but they need to keep on top of repairs.

Please do not go here. Bed was really hard and uncomfortable. Owner demanded payment as soon as we arrived, before we had even seen the room! Not only that but he was very unfriendly and not at all polite and welcoming. Water coming out of shower was either boiling hot or freezing. A very depressing experience for my husband and I.

This is the most horrible hotel i have ever stayed in.
the room was choking with air freshener (to cover up what i dont know???)
the beds were damp and the walls were covered in odd black streaks.
the windows dont open and the window sills were covered in dead flys!
the proprietors were on the unfriendy side too!

Compared to some of the other B&B's we stayed at in Scotland, the Hillhead was not as luxurious. However, the manager on duty was very friendly and helpful with local knowledge. Breakfast was very good, as it is everywhere in Scotland! Our room was in the basement of the hotel (really a B&B, despite the name) ... and while adequately large for a family of 4, the wallpaper just screamed PINK and the mattresses definitely need to be retired. Good location ... close to the University of Glasgow and the Hunterian Art Museum (a must-see). Only about 3 blocks to the tube station, where you can catch the subway to downtown Glasgow. Many restaurants available in the university district.

This place was a great find! Very convenient for the University and Glasgow's West End nightlife. The place was spotless and the staff could not be more helpful. I will definitely be staying at the Hillhead Hotel again.
