We stayed at the Hillhead two nights. We took the overnight train from London, and arrived about 10 in the morning. The hardworking, but not particularly cheery breakfast lady/maid gave us our room early, which we appreciated.
The furnishings were old and very cheap to start with. The room was relatively clean, except for a big wet spot at the bathroom entrance. It may have been dye from the carpet, but it looked like blood on the sock of the person that stepped in it, and on the towels that we left on top the rest of our visit.
That wasn't the worst part of the bathroom. The machine that instantly heats water for the shower had been torn off the wall and wires were showing. There was a bathroom down the hall that they let us use, and they fixed (well, attached it back on the wall) our bathroom that day, but they should have noticed the problem when they cleaned the bathroom?!! I wonder if the previous visitor got mad at having to take cold showers and tore it off. The water never did heat in our room. The hot water to the sink didn't work, and the cold was only a trickle. The hall bathroom was fine.
The owner and his wife were nice--take their advice on the best Indian restaurants in town. The immediate location was rather run down, but a close walk to shopping, bus, and the university. This hotel has a lot of possibilities, but they need to keep on top of repairs.
