Have just spent a wonderful long weekend in Glasgow and 3 terrific nights at the Kelvingrove. Everything was tip top, a lovely family atmosphere, nothing was too much trouble, the beds and rooms were so comfortable and the breakfasts kept us going for most of the day.
We are so please to have found somewhere that we know we can return to in full confidence of a relaxing, enjoyable break.
Our grateful thanks to the family and the staff. We are set up for the winter!

  • Liked — The care of the family and rtaff
  • Disliked — The traffic noise but that was nothing to do with the hotel!

Welcome - that's the word which sums up the Kelvingrove. If you are visiting stay here. From the moment you arrive you get the typical Glaswegian welcome for visitors. Mandy and Jackie on reception could not be warmer or friendlier and are extremely helpful. The hotel itself is inexpensive, comfortable and (the rooms at the back at least) very quiet. The breakfast is good with a choice of hot and cold, and they will even provide room service for no extra cost.
The Kelvingrove is in an excellent position. About a 20 minute walk into the centre but also in an area full of decent restaurants, bars and museums. The Kelvingrove Art Gallery is only 5 mins walk away and the Huntarian & Charles Renee Mackintosh House c.10 mins walk (if you are into the latter do take a tour of the Glasgow School of Art - I know they do tours at 11.00 & 12.00 on a Saturday).
One potential word of warning - it might be slightly tricky parking. We arrived at 3.00 pm and had no problem whatsoever (on street parking is free at weekends and after 6.00 pm on weekdays but we were provided with a voucher for £2 by the hotel) however when we returned from the Art Gallery at c.6.00 pm there didn't appear to be any spots free around the hotel.

We only stayed one night but we loved it! The staff was extremely accommodating - even doing laundry for us. The room was charmingly decorated and very large. Everthing was fresh and clean. The location was excellent with several wonderful pubs nearby for eating and drinking and entertainment. At breakfast, we were treated to the private dining room where we felt pampered and as I said above, treated like the queen. We would definitely return to this establishment, hopefully for a longer stay.

My wife and I stayed at the Kelvingrove for six consecutive nights in late September-early October while I was attending a conference, and then for a final after night after a quick trip to the Scottish Highlands. Typical of the extremely welcoming approach of the hotel was Valerie's greeting when we returned after our trip - "I put on the lights and turned the heat on in the room so you would be comfortable right away."

The hotel is indeed very comfortable, the rooms, at least in the rear, quiet and the breakfasts very tasty. But it is the friendliness which is the Kelvingrove's distinctive feature. Everyone on the staff goes out of their way to ask how your day was, offer helpful suggestions, and just create a welcoming environment. All of this without being too familiar. As someone who travels widely, the Kelvingrove Hotel was overall one of the most pleasant stays in my experience.

This is the first time I have ever felt compelled to write a review. I am very discriminating when it comes to hotels and this hotel was marvelous. I knew when I saw the well cared for flower boxes outside that I was in for a treat. It wasn't just that the hotel was clean and tidy and that the breakfast room is just perfect it was Mandy, her mother and grandmother that made the stay so memorable. The great travel writer Paul Therous who said that it is the people that make the trip and that was true for us at the Kelvingrove. We stayed there two times during our trip and both rooms were spotless. A note to American travelers hotel rooms in the UK can be a bit smaller than in the US, but I'll take the cleanliness and warm atmosphere of the Kelvingrove any day.
