My family - Me, hubby, 2 teenage children and inlaws stayed at the hotel for two nights. The rooms had been booked by our cousin who was getting married in Glasgow - so we hadn't seen the hotel before. I must admit that I did read the reviews and had mixed feelings about coming but had been assured by cousin that he had looked at rooms and that everything was fine. It turns out that the hotel is now under new management (since 1st May) and in the process of being completely refurbished.
It is true that there are a number of winding steps so this hotel would not suit the less agile or disabled, but if you are between 6 and 65 there should be no problems.
We had 3 rooms between the 6 of us and they ranged from smallish to extremely large. My husband and I were at the top of the building in the John Knox room with a four poster bed and corner bath and fantastic views of the necropolis.
Breakfast was lovely, wide choice and Sean was always on hand to fill up your coffee cup if it looked like it ws emptying and the toast just keeps on coming!!
The hotel is very central - Glasgow is very small compared to London and quite easy to get around.
On the first night of our stay we ate in the bar and the food was great, really fresh and very tasty and the house rose was lovely too.
The hotel is a work in progress - there are signs on the stairs to say this, but I am sure that the place will be fantastic when it is completely finished. It is full of character and has a very varied past - sit in the bar and Sean will fill you in on its history.
One tip I will give you is that the car parking is limited - just drop them an email so that they know you are driving and then they will let you park in the beer garden - don't worry it is fully paved!!
Please disregard any older negative reviews and give the hotel a chance - I'm really glad that we did.
