It was with some caution that I checked into this hotel after reading the reviews on TripAdvisor after I had booked a room here (never a good thing to do!).

The hotel is situated right in the heart of Glasgow on the steps of local shops and theatres. When I arrived at the Buchanan about 3pm and was met at the reception immediately. I was able to check-in without any delays and the man on reception explained to me clearly on how to find my room and the restaurant along with the times breakfast was served the following morning. The reception was bright and well laid-out with plenty of literature covering days out in and around Glasgow.

After taking the lift to my floor, I easily found my room. The carpets in the corridors and stairs in the public areas were looking tired and well-worn in parts.

I had originally booked a single room, but when I got to my room I found I had been allocated a double at no extra cost. The room was not what you might call "deluxe" but wasn't a dump by any means. The furniture was old but functional. The bed comfortable with lovely clean cotton sheets on it. The bathroom had everything in it you wanted and was clean. The shower nozzle came out directly from the ceiling which was ideal for drenching me when I showered". There was a tv in the room with limited channels available. My room was at the back of the hotel so did not experience any of the street noise noted by other reviewers. The lack of air conditioning might be problematical in the summer. I had to open a window in the middle of January.

The hotel still uses conventional keys for rooms and not the credit-card type used in more modern hotels. Because of this, you are asked to hand in your key before you leave the hotel and collect it from reception on your return. I was able to retrieve my key without delay each time I returned to the hotel. (Much better than carrying a huge key fob around with you anyway.)

The breakfast (which was included in the cost of my stay) was good. Plenty of juices and cereal, bread rolls, fruit and yoghurts to help yourself to. A waitress then came to bring me a pot of lovely coffee and some toast. She also asked if I wanted a cooked breakfast. She brought me back a huge feast of hot food which had obviously been cooked to order. There was far to much on the plate to eat which encouraged me to limit my choice the following morning!

I checked-out after my 2 night stay with the same efficiency I experienced when I checked-in.

This isn't a luxury hotel by any standards. In fact, it can be described as "tired" in some parts. But considering my stay cost me 90GBP for 2 nights bed & breakfast I can't complain. My room was clean and warm which are my basic requirements for any hotel and all the staff who served me were very friendly and efficient. I would go back there.

The only good thing about this hotel is the staff and location other than that !!!! Perhaps a stint on "how clean is my ...." would be useful. Rooms tiny and dilapidated and threadbare, shower clogged with hair so had a problem draining water, take your own towels! The lock on the door was very unstable and either got stuck or did not lock at all. Very disheartening, one night was more than enough - we should have checked some more but thought it was such a bargain, we were very very wrong.

….but that is the only positive thing I can think to say about this place. The location of this hotel was indeed great – right in the centre of Glasgow in a traffic free street. What more could you want? Well just about any other hotel. This hotel without any question ranks as the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. This taught me the valuable lesson of reading up Tripadvisor before I commit to a particular hotel.

I stay in quite a lot of hotels, both business and pleasure. For business, as this stay was, I rely on a Hotel Booking Agency to meet my needs. I think they only looked at the location, which was perfect for my needs. My room was small, smelly (a smoking room despite my request for a non-smoking! Of course there were no ‘non-smokings’ left) and the non-matching and decrepit furniture that looked as if it had come out of a jumble sale. The carpet was threadbare. It wasn’t especially clean either (ie the room and the carpet). However, the sheets were clean. Non of this was mitigated by price; OK, it wasn't over the top expensive, but certainly at £52 (single) it did not represent anything like value for money.

I didn’t bother with breakfast. The overall standard of the hotel put me off.

I complained to the Booking Agency about the standard of this place, and it has now been removed from their list.

If I’m on a business trip, I often ask myself “Would I bring my wife to this hotel”? I find this a useful way to reach a judgement. In this case, the answer is an unequivocal NO WAY. I’ll never stay there again myself, let alone with my wife.

My suggestion is to try Jurys Inn instead for a just a few pounds more, but far superior. It is only 5 minute walk away from the Buchanan.

We have just returned from a weekend in Glasgow for the World Pipeband Competition. What was meant to be a fantastic weekend was a disaster from start to finish due to hotel.

We arrived to be told the room we had booked was not available and that we now had a double instead of a twin. They did reassure us we would be moved in the morning.

When we reached the room it took us almost 15minutes to get into due to a broken lock. On inspection of the room we discovered it wasnt a double room, the bathroom door did not lock and there was a half eaten packet of biscuits. What choice did we have but to stay as everywhere else was booked out.

In the morning we were told to leave our bags in the room and they would be moved to twin room. We were promised, but looking back we shouldnt have listened.

We returned to the hotel at 9pm after a long day to be told there had been a mix up and that we were still in the same room and that there were no others free. Then all of a sudden there was a room free, the room we were told in the morning we would be moving to. Guess what, when we went to the room it was occupied. Miraculously though, there was another room.

This free room was a twin room but was absolutely disgusting, shower covered in hairs, towels already used and dirty glasses.

My boyfriend and I stayed here as my work had a do in Glasgow and £75 for the room (internet booking) seemed reasonable - the full price is advertised as £120. Bed - tiny. Carpet - filthy and had an iron burn. Floor - massively tilted - but that was quirky and we didn't mind. Bath panels held together by sticky tape. Bath towels - for tiny people only. I asked the very pleasant receptionist when I was checking out if that room was typical and she said it is a low budget hotel - that was the only response. There must be comparably priced hotels with better rooms. Hope they spend some money on it to - it's in such a great location!
