It was with some caution that I checked into this hotel after reading the reviews on TripAdvisor after I had booked a room here (never a good thing to do!).
The hotel is situated right in the heart of Glasgow on the steps of local shops and theatres. When I arrived at the Buchanan about 3pm and was met at the reception immediately. I was able to check-in without any delays and the man on reception explained to me clearly on how to find my room and the restaurant along with the times breakfast was served the following morning. The reception was bright and well laid-out with plenty of literature covering days out in and around Glasgow.
After taking the lift to my floor, I easily found my room. The carpets in the corridors and stairs in the public areas were looking tired and well-worn in parts.
I had originally booked a single room, but when I got to my room I found I had been allocated a double at no extra cost. The room was not what you might call "deluxe" but wasn't a dump by any means. The furniture was old but functional. The bed comfortable with lovely clean cotton sheets on it. The bathroom had everything in it you wanted and was clean. The shower nozzle came out directly from the ceiling which was ideal for drenching me when I showered". There was a tv in the room with limited channels available. My room was at the back of the hotel so did not experience any of the street noise noted by other reviewers. The lack of air conditioning might be problematical in the summer. I had to open a window in the middle of January.
The hotel still uses conventional keys for rooms and not the credit-card type used in more modern hotels. Because of this, you are asked to hand in your key before you leave the hotel and collect it from reception on your return. I was able to retrieve my key without delay each time I returned to the hotel. (Much better than carrying a huge key fob around with you anyway.)
The breakfast (which was included in the cost of my stay) was good. Plenty of juices and cereal, bread rolls, fruit and yoghurts to help yourself to. A waitress then came to bring me a pot of lovely coffee and some toast. She also asked if I wanted a cooked breakfast. She brought me back a huge feast of hot food which had obviously been cooked to order. There was far to much on the plate to eat which encouraged me to limit my choice the following morning!
I checked-out after my 2 night stay with the same efficiency I experienced when I checked-in.
This isn't a luxury hotel by any standards. In fact, it can be described as "tired" in some parts. But considering my stay cost me 90GBP for 2 nights bed & breakfast I can't complain. My room was clean and warm which are my basic requirements for any hotel and all the staff who served me were very friendly and efficient. I would go back there.
