We booked a one night stay at the Glasgow Marriot Hotel on Saturday 6th August 2006. We arrived at 3.00 p.m. - 1 hour after check-in time of 2.00 p.m. to be advisd our room was not ready (we had booked the Executive Floor!) and were given a "key" to use the Executive Lounge whilst we were waiting.
We should have been alerted to problems to come when we went to this lounge - it was very hot and there was a portable air conditioning unit blowing in the corner which we thought rather strange. After 30 minutes we checked again on the availability of our room - still not available - so in order to get away from the heat inside the hotel we decided to go for a walk. Upon returning at 5.00 we were advised our room was ready.
It may have been ready, but the airconditioning in the room was not working and when we called to advise reception we were told that there was a problem with the airconditioning plant which was affecting several areas of the hotel and there was nothing they could do other than give us oscillating fans!!! By this time, on a warm humid day, the sweat was breaking out all over us.
It was our intention to use the hotels facilities in the afternoon i.e. swimming pool, jacuzzi, relax by having a couple of drinks in the "comfortable" Executive Lounge prior to getting ready to go out for dinner. None of these things was possible and we had to get ready for our evening out (special celebration) with sweat on our brows.
We made a vain attempt to sleep in these conditions and also had to open the window with the noise of the traffic contributing to the problem.
The following morning we went down for breakfast only to find that the restaurant was also affected by the airconditioning breakdown. Needless to say we didn't linger too long.
The hotel did discount our bill by 50% however on reflection this does not seem like nearly enough, in fact compensation should have been offered.
