I booked the Carlton George for a weekend visit to Glasgow. I visit Glasgow five or six times a year and normally stay in the Hilton or the Radisson. As I had friends coming to Glasgow for the first time I decided to book the Carlton George as I thought it might be a little more unique than a chain hotel.
I paid two nights for an executive room number 511. The cost for the two nights was £375, so not at all cheap. The benefit of the “executive room” was access to the residents bar which I thought would be a quiet and comfortable place to relax and have a drink. This is the only bar in the hotel and so far as I am aware, only open to people, who pay the executive room supplement.
The room was a very disappointing size; it was very small. There was about eighteen inches between each side of the bed and the wall. Access to one side of the bed was impeded by an armchair which was too big for the room. I am writing to the hotel on this as I do not believe it was actually an executive room.
The bathroom, replete with tartan tiles, was also very small and nothing in it of note; some loose tiles but very very standard.
Most of the hotel’s residents seemed to have lounge access, so it was far from quiet and actually getting a seat a big problem. Some residents were unable to contain either their excitement or greed at being able to access free alcohol. The noise was excessive; the sing song un-necessary and overall, this was not great.
Breakfast was ok. Good buffet selection, and very Scottish. Egg Chef…asked for fried eggs and I’m still waiting for these, whilst not rude, he was far from pleasant. The waiting staff were largely ineffectual, good at taking orders from you but not good at delivering requests. It’s a small dining room so you may have to queue and wait for a table.
£375 is more than I have ever paid for a Glasgow hotel and I do not think the Carlton George delivered value for money in any way. Next time, I’ll stay in the Radisson for around half the price.
