The Carlton George is in a very central location just off George Square and right next to Queen Street railway station and Buchanan Street underground station.

We had a Club room on the second floor for 9 nights. There were 2 lifts which were very efficient. The room was at the front of the building and it was sometimes noisy at night but we were able to close the double-glazed windows and use the air conditioning so it was not a problem. The room was well-equipped with mini bar (free), tea/coffee making facility, trouser press, iron and board, wifi access, dressing gowns, slippers etc. The bed was comfortable and the en suite had a lovely big bath. A complimentary newspaper each day was much appreciated.

The restaurant on the top floor has a good view over the city. There was plenty of choice for breakfasts, which were included in our package. We asked for something which was not on the menu and this was procured especially for us at no extra charge. The dinner menu was somewhat expensive but the food was good and was attractively presented. The Pre Theatre menu was rather limited but we were fortunate that the menu changes, which we understand are 6-weekly, happened during our stay.

The Executive Lounge was pleasant to relax in and also had 2 computers, a free bar and a good coffee maker.

The staff were polite, attentive and friendly, and we were impressed that the receptionist remembered our name very quickly. A couple of minor problems were dealt with swiftly.

We would definitely stay there again and would unreservedly recommend it to others.

We really enjoyed this hotel during our first visit to Glasgow. It was very well located and was a good base for exploring the city. We stayed in a Club Room which was a good size and also gave us access to the pleasant club lounge where we enjoyed pre-dinner drinks and free internet access via dedicated terminals. The free mini bar was a very nice touch and although it had a limited selection (and the smallest cans of soft drink we have ever seen)... such a pleasant change from the ridiculous prices most hotels charge for this service. Breakfasts were also very good and included a small buffet selection and a nice choice that could be ordered off the menu (all included in the room rate).

  • Liked — The free mini bar
  • Disliked — The tartan shower curtain

After confirming our booking with this hotel well in advance and excited about staying there after reading reviews on tripadvisor we arrived late on the evening of our stay to be told that our room was taken because of overbooking and that we had been booked out to another hotel. We had wanted a hotel close to the station in the centre of the city. We were given a taxi to the Hilton which is on the city periphery and not a place easily walked to. Staff were polite but cold and clearly couldn't wait to be rid of us.

The Hilton was fine ... but it was not the sort of hotel we had wanted to stay in, nor in the location we had wanted to stay. So I'm sure that the George is a very fine hotel if you get to stay there ...but, given that they confirmed my booking twice in advance and then still bumped us elsewhere I don't know how you'd know for sure that you'll actually get a room.

I stayed at the Carlton George for my birthday during July 2007. I opted for an executive room, which was much smaller than I expected and was also incredibly hot! The air conditioning didn't seem to work! Having said that, I enjoyed my stay. The executive rooms are worth the extra, for acces to the lounge with free drinks, newspapers, internet. Nice way to kick off an evening out. The location is great too, with the main shopping street close by. For the price (GBP110 per night, not including breakfast) I would thoroughly recommend the Carlton George.

My wife and I spent two nights in an executive room at the George July 1-3, 2007 and were not impressed. Hotel has a great location. Good proximity to the train stations and the airport bus. Mini bar and Executive Lounge are well done. Staff is modestly pleasant and helpful. Breakfast was adequate but not the best we've had in British
hotels by a long shot.

On check-in the room had a roll-out bed in the middle of the floor. Staff removed it but left us with an un-cased pillow and towels sitting on the desk which were never collected.

On the second evening we had just gone to bed when water began to drip from a light fixture in the ceiling. We called the front desk and were promptly given another room. However once settled in the replacement room we realized it was set up for single rather than double occupancy (one towel, one glass, one bathrobe etc). It smelled
quite stongly of cigarette smoke even though a no-smoking sign was on
the table. Most significantly the air conditioning did not function and the room never got below +25C all night.

Overall the hotel was adequate but had a number of weaknesses you wouldn't expect for the price. I will try someplace else next time in Glasgow.
