May 16, 2008 | Trip type: Business, Couples

I booked a double bed club room for 3 nites to attend a meeting at the adjacent convention centre. Whilst not a terrible stay, many disappointing aspects to this stay....mainly related to poor training IMHO.

1. Arrived after a 32 hour trip from Sydney at 1230pm. Told that no chance of an early check in; try after 2pm. OK...I was early but no recognition that I was a PC Plat member. Reminded the girl that I had booked a club room, so asked whether I could wait in the lounge; reluctantly agreed.

Got stuck in the revolving door at the entrance of the hotel with luggage on arrival. Instead of receiving assistance, was told that I should have used the adjacent door!

2. Asked then for a late checkout for 3 pm on day of departure....after much haggling, reluctantly given 2 pm; again no recognition that I was a PC plat member even when I did mention it.

3. Booked a room that included bfast but had to ask about it, where the restaurant was, what time it opened etc...should have been automatically told!

4. room was OK with nice view of river...but very hot; when turned on air conditioner, it was very, very noisy....so resorted to sleeping in my birthday suit!

5. After finally putting my head onto the pillow after the long flight, there was a fire alarm, and had to evacuate the hotel by going down the stairs from the 15th floor. OK this can happen anywhere, and after 1/2 hour waiting outside in the cold, was told that it was a false alarm. Thought nothing more about it, until one of the other guests said the same thing had happened at the same time the day before. No explanation or apology from hotel.

6. Only one miserable plate of canapes in the (small) lounge in the evening...which was not replaced when finished, so too bad if you got there late. Hey, I'm paying for this privilige....when I could not find any drinking glasses, was nonchantly told to look in the cupboard below. No effort to obtain it for me; who is the guest again?

7. room was not cleaned til very late in the afternoon eg 3pm + so if i returned early from my meeting.....now I know why I couldn't get an early checkin

8. On last day despite having a late checkout til 2 pm, was already locked out of my room by 1pm, and had to go down to front desk to have my card recoded.

9. The only recognition of my PC plat status was a formed letter offering all PC gold and plat members a discount on their next stay. Great when you live in Sydney, Australia. At other CPs, I have received somthing simple like a bottle of wine / fruit platter / chocolates to acknowledge this.

Positives:
1. convenient covered walk way to Conference centre so don't have to brave the cold , wet Glasgow weather.
2. Good view of river from my room
3. reasonable breakfast but had only one type of egg - fried! a couple of egg choices would have been nice.

I voiced most of these concerns to the guest manger on check out, and am still waiting a response 3 weeks later. I have stayed in many Crowne Plazas around the world (hence PC Plat status), and I'm sorry to say that the CP Glasgow lets the family down, in particular from a service point of view. A lot of my issues / concerns can easily be fixed with better training...oh well!!

PS: I have posted this 3 weeks after my stay, and a lot of my irritation has subsided. ..not what you want when you have paid over £180 per night for a room!

Thanks for your constructive review and apologies for the disappointment you experienced. Its true that many of the issues you encountered could easily have been avoided by adhering to the agreed standards and remembering that "the little things do matter"!

I have discussed your review as the basis of a review of some of the standards we offer and am pleased to say that we have already implemented some of the improvements such as club lounge offerings etc.One of the main issues was obviously communication which is of paramount importance in this industry.

I have also replied directly to you. Sorry about the delay. Dominic McVey

Stayed at this hotel last night. It's a bit out out on a limb, but I guess it has a good buzz if an event is on at the nearby arena.

Stayed in room 816 and the air condition rattled which was somewhat annoying.

Breakfast was a bit bizarre - if you turn up and jut go and eat, the cost is £16.05, yet you can go to reception and get a voucher for £10 which gets you the same - what's going on there?

The bar / reception / restaurant area is in my opinion somewhat dated - it reminds me a bit of the early nineties. I stopped by the Hilton on the way for a colleague and the same area was far superior.

That said, for 1 night it did the job, but next time I'll plump for the Hilton or Marriott more in town.

  • Liked — A taxi was there in the morning to wisk me away to the land of work
  • Disliked — The air conditioning rattling

Glad you enjoyed your stay and that the hotel met your needs. I was sorry to hear about the air conditioning though and have asked maintenance to check it out.

I am pleased to confirm that our pre paid b'fast promo is working well as most guests now avail themselves of this offer.

I note the hotel wasn't as central as you would have preferred but pleased that there were taxis readily available for you on the rank outside the front door.

Stayed for 5 nights. Location for visiting Glasgow is way out from downtown so needed to take train or taxi to get anywhere. Staff at check in were inefficient so took 30 min in line to get room and then not at all welcoming or even pleasant to us from the get go. Room was nicely appointed with frig and towel warmer but somewhat dirty in the edges and bath. Asked for two beds and got one. the room ac/furnace did not work so we sweltered the first evening but that was fixed the next day. we were told there were no more bathrobes so one of us was out of luck for the whole 6 days. The staff in the restaurant and bar were really nice and friendly which was the highlight. you carried your own luggage and hailed your own taxi. The front desk staff never once were congenial even on checkout. For a Crowne Plaza, the manger needs to get retrained on how to run a hotel up to standard. We were glad to leave, even though we loved Glasgow.

I was genuinely concerned to read your review particularly as the issues you raised should never have happened. I am confident they can easily be addressed. As you quite correctly say, training is needed , including management to ensure we deliver those standards that one has come to expect from a Crowne Plaza. I can assure you , this has already commenced.

On a brighter note, I am pleased you enjoyed visiting Glasgow but am sorry we didn't meet while you were staying.

Stayed at this hotel for three nights for my hen party in glasgow. Loved everything bar the location as we had to organise taxi's everytime we wanted to go to the city centre. The pool was fab along with the room servive, hotel staff (extremely friendly esp at the residence bar!) and the breakfast was to die for. We had a slight problem with the room which was quickly resolved and we were moved to a bigger room with no camp beds as i particular requested that we would not use them when booking. 10 out of 10 for this super hotel!!

We booked in advance + received an email from Michelle on reception that as I was disabled, if I phoned en-route, a car parking space would be reserved for us. On phoning at services on M74, Scott answered phone, stated he knew nothing about reserved car park spaces + then hung up!
On arrival (+ thereafter) we did manage to park in the blue badge places each time, however this incident set the tone. Scott showed us to our room, not willing to engage in conversation, maybe he was having a bad day.
Our room, on 14th floor, was very clean with good complimentary products provided. Teletext would have been nice for the TV, the air con was noisy + the mini bar prices extortionate (£1.50 for a small bag of peanuts!).
At breakfast, we were told to wait by a stern faced woman, so that she could check there was a table free (the place was almost empty). We were not allowed to select a table.Food very good.
For dinner, the ala carte menu got rather samey after two nights and the service was very slow, however again food was well presented + cooked.
I would echo comments by other guests re the plugs at floor level. I am disabled + my mother is 81, so it was not easy for either of us to get down on hands + knees to plug in the kettle at a socket partially hidden behind one of the beds.
Was also surprised to make a "freephone" call to an 0800 number in the room + to be charged £1.00 for it on the bill!
These, however, were minor points compared to events during breakfast on our second last day.
As I was about to commence eating, Garry came over + asked whether "that was for injections", pointing to my insulin pen. I told him that I was an insulin dependent diabetic + required 4 injections daily, once immediately before each meal (fast acting insulin) + once after breakfast daily (long acting insulin). He stated that another guest had complained to staff about my injecting "you did the same thing yesterday at breakfast". I asked him where he expected me to inject. "In your room" was the reply. I pointed out to him that our room was on the 14th floor, and especially bearing in mind the slow service in the evening, I would probably have passed out by the time I got to eat. He then suggested the disabled toilet. I informed him that in my opinion it was unacceptable to expect me to break my skin in a public toilet. In addition, I also pointed out the provisions of the Disability Discrimination Act. It appears obvious that your staff are not aware of this Act. Nothing more was said about this afterwards, except that Garry asked us for our room number on leaving the restaurant area. We half expected a notice to terminate our booking to be on the dressing table when we got back from that days outing. This episode soured the whole experience of staying at the Crowne Plaza. I would add that when I inject, I am discreet and inject on the side of my stomach away from the nearest other person. This takes 10 seconds. I also wish to point out that at no time were any of the staff rude.
To conclude, I would not recommend staying here for anybody that requires to inject insulin for their survival. I also feel that £5.00 daily parking charges for residents (especially blue badge holders) is excessive.
I did complete a hotel review form with most of these comments on and submitted it (addressed to Mr McVey) to reception, along with my email address for a reply. Nothing received as yet!

  • Liked — Location, food (especially breakfast), views, pool, sauna
  • Disliked — expensive add ons (especially charging for freephone calls) and staff ignorance re disability

Thankyou for your review and apologies for the issues you encountered. I am sure I have already written in response to your questionnaire, again, I am sorry if you have not yet received my letter. I am particularly sorry about the incident at breakfast which the guest relations manager has now briefed me about and would appreciate the opportunity to discuss this with you on the telephone. With regard to the sockets in the room, these are available in the " periscope" unit on each desk in every room to allow ease of use.Perhaps we need to highlight this better by use of a small card on the kettle? On a brighter note I was pleased to read that you found the room clean and the food well served. We are however currently reviewing all our menus as we do every 3-4 months.
